Fly fishing in Cherokee, NC

Anyone done this before? Anyone have a good guide to recommend?

When you get to Cherokee and see how many places you can just stop on the side of the road and pull out a fly rod you probably won’t want a guide. Tons of little streams lakes and ponds.

I like the area around River Vally Campground. Its catch and release right below and you can have it at times all to yourself

There are an unbelievable amount of walk to right off the road spots. Also opening day is a zoo up there FYI.

You are in salt thread but, yes Many times. They stock during mid week and again on Friday evening - no matter what the license brochure says. Any store sells a day license and tackle. The hatchery truck stops and actually pour fish off the back of the truck into the creeks and rivers. Seen it!! Pro tip: anywhere there is a bridge or road is right next to the water is likely a stocking spot. No guide needed. To bait fish; Drift fish with a split shot & hook or fish with float & one kernel of corn with a small piece of wiggler worm on a small trout hook #6, #8, or #10. Mepps spinners, spin flies, panther martins, and rooster tails will work if you into artificials. Fly fish with a double rig - dry on top and nymph on the bottom. Or a hopper or woolybooger. Fish cover - rips&riffles , cut banks, front & back of big rocks, deep channel cuts, front and back of pools. I have better luck on smaller creeks though, I have caught bigger fish in the big river. Just not as easy to wade to and easier to pick the good spots on the smaller creeks. My favorites are Soco and Raven Fork. The ponds at KOA are another spot. Good for kids and the family thing. The deal there is that usually a bite in morning and one late afternoon. Either may last 30-60 min and they are done. A lot of wait and see - and the bite might not happen at all. Most use Power Bait fished on the bottom there.

Thanks for the info!!! I will probably fly fish, but the handful of breastically-enhanced females with me will likely want to bait fish or spinning rod fish. We will give this a shot.

Patagonia? Speaking of posers. For flyfishing you need Orvis stuff. Skinnee if youo need to borrow any gear let me know. Have several rods and reels you could borrow. I’ve fished the Horsepasture and French Broad Rivers up there a good bit but personally I get bored with it quick. Take your golf clubs also.

He’s going fly fishing, not bobbing for breeders.

Sick burn. No way I could have freshwater stuff to fish with. That would be absurd.

Begging for numbers in Cherokee,jeeze

Lived in Waynesville for a little while…You don’t need a guide,go buy a can of corn and find a spot…They dump thousands of fish off a bridge every couple months just to keep the " natives" happy…fish the pools behind the rocks marked with a $ sign.

“Guide”, that’s funny as…

Last time out rolling towards the jetties, I saw a “$” marked on the red can off Sully’s…true story.

I am from western NC, about 50 miles west of cherokee in small town of Murphy, the Rivers in Cherokee are numerous and they flow off of the smokey mountains, and really anywhere you can pull off the road will be fine, you will see the road follows the river also check out the Nantahala Gorge if you can dodge the rafters the fishing is good there too, take old hwy 19/74 from cherokee towards Bryson City it is a two lane and beautiful , it follows the river for miles:smiley: and if you throw some salt in the water there we can talk on this site lol [:0]
