Hi there. I’m a relative newbie to fly fishing and have never done it in saltwater. We make an annual pilgrimage to visit family on Seabrook Island and my 12 yr old son and I always fish from the beach. This summer we’re gonna be there late June/early July and I’d like to try some fly fishing. We can walk to a good spot where Privateer Creek hits the Edisto River. It’s a narrow channel that gets fairly deep around high tide. My questions are, would this be a good spot to fly fish for reds? what size rod/reel would be best? what else can you catch on the fly at a spot like that? Thanks for any guidance!
Looking at google earth that looks like a great spot for Reds. You should be able to find them in the marsh on the flood tides. You may want to poke around and see if you can find some wadeable grass flats before running out there. 7/8/9 wt would be ideal.
Also, there are going to be some 7ft tides around that time, plenty of grass will be flooded. Get your son out there and enjoy the lowcountry. You may or may not catch a fish, but just seeing the tailers out there is exciting too!
