Fly Fishing the Docks and structure

Love to fly fish but mostly experienced with fishing freshwater. Last 2 years fishing the saltwater creeks. Don’t have a skinny water boat or waded the flats but been fishing docks and stucture with no luck. Caught several rats today with spinning rod and live shrimp but no takers on my fly rod. Been using copper colored and shrimp imitation flies. I know I will have better luck in the winter when the bait leaves the creeks and the Reds or schooling but can anyone give me any advice for fishing docks and structure this time of year and summer when there is plenty of live bait in the creeks? Would love just to fish the creeks, docks and structure with my fly rod and put the spinning rods and bait casting rods away.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Rarely will you hear someone say they catch more fish with a fly rod.

That being said… I hate to fish with anything but my fly rods these days. I use a grub on a spinning rod to explore new areas. Once I figure out what kind of fish are at a place, I then switch off to the fly rod. For me, it’s the experience and not the numbers. For some… the number is the experience. Just me.

PS: I have had some FANTASTIC fishing from land around docks and off the banks of creeks on the fly rod. Fall trout LOVE a ‘Deceiver’.

I recommend fly fishing at night under dock lights year round. Use grey and white cloister with a no. 6 hook.

Fun and great eating.

trout love docks and moving water…try and fish it like a mtn trout stream. mend so you keep a tight line and drift through the runs (current seams, docks/structure, dropoff’s.) Clousers, deceivers, all good flies Floating lines are fine, but a sink tip will get you in their zone perfectly (clear tip w/ a 5’ leader is gold)

Great advice guys. Thanks
