I’m driving down to the keys over labor day weekend and bringing my fly rod and kayak to catch some fish. Anyone have any suggestions on where to fish and what to use?
what key? try larger (sz. 1ish) flies oceanside for bones. white clousers, rag head crab, rootbeer/ brown craft fur (winged) barred flies are real simple and nab about anything down there
Thanks for the suggestions. We are staying in key west though plan on fishin and kayaking off one of the keys on our drive to key west. Would you have any suggestion what key to stop at and cast the fly?
not quite sure in a yak, it can be alotta ground to cover. labor day might be real busy, id have a big ol safety flag flyin so i didnt get run over.
there are so many good flats to fish on the drive down. google earth and a few printouts will give you days of fushin… teatable, marathons sombrero beach, islamorada oceanside are prodctive well known starting points.
I had approx 70 eats by baby tarpon in KW in March. Hooked 40 and landed several. Also caught barracuda and jacks. Fish lighted docks at night

3 good flats: Mile Marker 74, Anne’s Beach just before Channel 2, and Currey Hammock State Park, Grassy Key
Patterns that look greenbacks (aka greenies, whitebait, pilchards) work great for snook. These work really good as well.
The snook population got decimated down there this past winter. Not sure how it has recovered but I would guess there are still a lot less than previously had been

thanks everyone for the good information.
Snook population ok around keys, heaviest casualities were north, in park. You can wade on ocean side of ohio and missouri keys, bones at low water, permit at high water. the bay side of both fish well but you need a kayak as bottom is soft

Newman,
Which side of those keys would usually fish better?
