I go to the citadel and there are some vast marsh flats here. Supposedly, i can keep sports equipment (fly fishing stuff) in my room and go fishing on my “off time”. However, i’m brandnew to this type of fishing and need to learn how to do it and get some tips before attempting it.
From reading up on here I’ve learned that I need to do it around the high tide (obviously…) and use Clouser minnows, crab patterns and maybe a gold spoon. Does anyone have any kind of tips for me on this type of fishing?
I’m not sure on what to look for when picking out a good spot to try advice?
Should i tool around in on a canoe(all i’ll have available) until i find a suitable spot? or just walk around?
Also, besides my rod and flies, what other equipment should i have? what type of shoes work best? Would it be worth investing in an around the waist tacklebox? Any other answers to questions that i may not be able to think of right now would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for helping a new kid to the sport.
And get some old tennis shoes, a couple of 9’ 10# leaders from Charleston Angler (Do NOT get the Orvis brand leaders) and get a few copperhead flies. I just use the plastic box they give you as my fly box. That’s all you need to get started.
Copperheads are the ticket. Been old faithful in the box for several years. Hardest part is finding a good wadeable flat. Sinking up to your arse in the mud is no fun. Practice your casting. I’ve been flyfishing for 15 years, and I got humbled this weekend when I couldn’t put the fly where I wanted. I put a paper plate on the ground and try to cast the fly into it. The canoe should give you the ability to move around a little bit. Throwing flys around oyster beds at lower tides produces as well. I only take about a half dozen flies, tippet material, incase I break my leader, snippers, camera, and a beer when I wade. It all usually fits in my pockets.
Rapchizzle,
Just look for my footsteps off the soccer field and you’ll find fish, used to find fish regularly around the inlet of the sportsman dock. I used to push around in a canoe and do the same thing. You can cover more ground in a canoe or kayak. Hit the spring tides this weekend. Look for short grass or flats with fiddler crabs crabs that will flood with higher water.
Yeap bet you’re glad the painting is done. I think that was the one thing I truelly hated my knob year…staying in all weekend and painting. Especially when you had some senior that wanted his name redone 3-4 times.
Also if they still have it…look into joining the rod and gun club. With people from all over the state there was always somebody that had a place to go shoot or fish for something (oh and they would put on special orders and give you an overnight when you went)
