New to the fly scene and would like to hear some advise on lines.
I have am 8wt - 7’11" medium rod. fairly beginning on he proper use of a fly rod.
I fish ponds, rivers for fresh water bass, bowfin, jacks, and gar. Also want to get deeper into wading reds, trout, and maybe one day soon Spanish macs. I have a 4/5wt - 7’ set up for trout and pan fish.
Question is WF? shooting? long taper?
Thanks
WF-F for just about everything unless you fish the surf then an intermediate line works best.
RIO’s Bonefish Quickshooter is my favorite line for salt and the RIO Gold is my go to bass and pan fish line… I have fished cortland and Scientific Angler lines and they were fine, not my favorites and wont spend any money on them now, Royal Wulff Bermuda Shorts is a great shooting head line. RIO lines tend to be on the upper end of the scale for the weights and I like a heavier line… Orvis wonderline, while I picked up a spool for $10 at the strangler, after about 2 months of fishing it in the salt I now know why it was $10…
But that is just my $ .02

Sorry for the long delay. Thank you for responding, I will read up on those.
No worries… Get yourself a good line… put a crappy $40 line on a $1000 rod and it will cast like a $40 rod and I have put a $80 RIO line on a $20 wal mart special and it casted really well…
The line is a huge part of the puzzle… I started on the cheapest line I could find and I paid for it. IT was hard to learn with and I was about to give up until a friend gave me an old RIO line he had and even tho it was a year old it was like night and day.
Fly fishing is casting the LINE not the lure so it is very important. I have never been disappointed with a RIO line. Go see ScottyD at the Lowcountry Fly shop and he’ll get ya the right line for what ya wanna do.
