i have a 9 wt and found a good price for some line but it is 8 wt line. Should i stay with 9wt or is it fine to go down to the 8wt.
I would stay with a 9 personally. It will take more line outside the rod tip, with the 8wt line, to properly load your rod. Some guys underline a rod on purpose for extra long distance casting. The draw back is it makes quick, short, accurate shots (like when sight fishing around here) more difficult.
I never underweight my rods… I over weight a few, one by 2 weights but never under… islander is right… it takes too much to get the rod to load properly and IMO it makes much more work in the cast.

just spend the extra money on rio line…worth every penny. match rod with line…makes casting easier.
Depends on how the rod handles the 9 wt line now.If it has the tendency to break down when you get a lot of 9 wt line out, then you can underweight.
Otherwise, I agree with the above.
