I am looking for a good combo to get started fly fishing this year. Not looking to break the bank but do not want to buy a piece of crap that I will not enjoy. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
What do you plan on fishing for?
Mainly reds in the grass and trout. I am guessing an 8 or 9 wt setup
I would suggest a TFO Pro series 4pc 9’ 8wt. I think an 8wt is the Minimum you need for salt and reds… Now before ya’ll fly off the handle, YES you can catch reds on a 3wt and yes there are those of you who do it all the time on a 6wt but for new people to FF ya should start wiht an 8wt… an 8wt has Plenty of backbone to handle redfish, can be a little over gunned on trout but better to be over gunned there than under gunned on a red, and it won’t break the bank… Lifetime warranty and they run about $160. If you aren’t going to travel much they also have a 2pc 9’ 8wt that is around $120. Great rods, not the best ( i.e. Sage, Winston, Loomis) but quality rods and you’ll be able to cast them pretty easy. Your reel is where you don’t want to skimp BUT… you can pick up a Reddinton Surge for about $80, good solid drag and it’s sealed or an Okuma SLV 8/9 solid drag and they run about $60. Fly line will run ya about $60… so you are looking at about $300 to get into a GOOD set up that will handle reds and isn’t somehting you’ll need to upgrade anytime soon. Now if ya have the $$$$ You can spend as much as ya want and go with the high end rods and reels, up to $600 for a reel and more and well over $700 for a rod… just make sure you cast the rod before you buy it and what ever ya do… don’t buy a $20 fly line…

cabelas has that reddington surge prespooled for 100 plus shipping…for myself i am picking up the cabelas stowaway 8 wt because it breaks dwn to 6 pieces and i do alot of traveling and like to bring my rod in my suitcase
Have you casted that stowaway Smokey? I am curious… My March Browns are 7 and 8pc rods and they cast like a 2pc rod. LOVE 'em and have fished them literally all over the world… Caught 2 world records on them and when I broke one in Iraq I called them and had a replacement in my hands in 10 days…

Depending on what you want to spend, can not go wrong with an entry level tfo and okuma reel. you can be up and running pretty cheap.
