I need help…
a friend of mine was coming with me and a bunch of friends for a day of relaxation at Cummings point. He brought his fly rod with him just in case he wanted to use it while we were out at the island. I put his rod in the rod holder on the boat. During our trip out there, we met up with another friends boat. We were tying up to his boat and during the tie-up one of the lines snagged under the reel of my friends fly rod and when I pulled on the line the rod flipped out of the rod holder and went straight into the water…rod over board.!!!
Here’s the question…I thought that it would be a good gesture on my part that I replace the rod. I know nothing of fly rods. When I checked into them I was surprised to find that they are pretty ■■■■ expensive!!! What should I do.??? It seems that rods are pretty personal…customized to the individual. I don’t think that the one that went into the water was exceptional because my friend didn’t seem to be overly upset, in fact he said “don’t worry about it”.
I don’t know what to do…
buy a new rod for him? What type and how much???
give him a $50 gift certificate to Charleston Angler?
do nothing and express my regrets???
any ideas???

I’m going to post this in the off topic section as well.
Man that is a tough question…i would just tell your buddy that you feel bad and you would like to somehow repay him for the rod…$50 won’t even buy new saltwater fly line. Even if you buy him a low end rod you are looking at min of $200 for a new rod and reel and fly line.
I have a 7wt, 9wt and a 5wt fly rod…each is over $600…That is why I have an insurance policy on all of them. Rod overboard is covered in that.
I would think that $100-$200 certificate to Cabelas would be a better idea than to the Angler. Cabelas has a lot of lower priced rods…or give him cash so he can go on EBAY!
Good luck!
First off yer a good friend for even caring and being worried about it. I wish there were more people like you in the world today! I would flat out ask my buddy if I could replace it. Ask him what kind of rod it was and see if you can find the same one and replace it. If he is not worried about it, it may have been a El Cheapo rod and reel he found in a trash pile somewhere but then again it may have been a reely nice set up. If he is anything like you he’ll tell ya straight up. If it was my rig in the drink and my friend asked me I’d tell him if it was a special rig and meant a lot and if it was a cheapo I would be more impressed with you feeling the way you do about it than the replacement…but Hotsauce hit the nail on the head $50 won’t even get ya middle of the road fly line… Hope it works out for ya.
