i’ve played with a fly rod/reel 2x , & my flats boat is setup for fly fishing i’m told because it has a large & fairly snag-free deck. when i bought the boat it had no cleats, so i added 1 popup cleat on the bow.
how much money would i need to invest in a decent setup? including line & a few flys. i’d like to get into fly fishing, but i’m not sure i want to afford it…
i am liking the Ross Flyrise reel i saw posted on here, but i have no clue about fly fishing. i wouldn’t know which rod to pair it with nor what to spool on it, lol
i don’t want to spend hundreds on getting into fly fishing, but i also hate junk so i know it will cost a couple hundred at least
input appreciated
I just picked up the TFO bvk for $249. Allen fly fishing kraken reel for $219… The guy I bought the rod from sold me some display line for $20 and gave me free backing. $500 got me a very nice setup. You can always go cheaper on things but I also don’t like junk. Good luck I am a beginner so my advice isn’t worth much…

thanks for the info
i’m really hoping to get setup for like $300 or less, but not use junk, prolly dreamin’ lol
I wouldnt go cheap man. Go reliable. Remember that fly fishing isnt a numbers game. One fish on the fly and your hard work has payed off. That being said the amount of time you’re going to put into preparing for your first fish (casting etc) dont risk all that hard work on a setup that cant finish the job.

Do a search on here for okuma slv reels… A lot of guys on here like them. You can pick them up for about $50. That saves you $70 right out the gate.

Can’t say it any better than this… these guys are worth the little bit more you’ll pay. And the little bit is just a little bit.

thanks for the tip madfire,
anyone have comments on the Okuma SLV reels?</font id=“size4”> the 7-8 reel is only $45 on amazon.com ( http://www.amazon.com/Okuma-SLV-Diecast-Aluminum-Reel/dp/B001V7EUU2/ref=pd_sim_sg_1 )
how about the Okuma SLV or Crisium Rods?</font id=“size4”> they’re $50-75 on amazon.com ( http://www.amazon.com/Okuma-Crisium-Graphite-2-Piece-9-Feet/dp/B001V7P416/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ) & ( http://www.amazon.com/Okuma-SLV-Graphite-4-Piece-Gray/dp/B001V7KT4I/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ) , both seem to be getting good reviews
wondering if that might be good enough 1st setup since it’d cost about 1/2 of the Ross + TFO combo
i showed up @ charleston angler, nice guys for sure, gonna put me back $295 for good setup (ross flyrise + tfo bvk + line/backing)
i’ll have to drop by your place too nikonjedi, it’s not too far away
i figure my best bet is to glean as much knowledge as i can from folks in the know, and to play w/ as many rod/reel combos as possible before purchase.
I have like 7 SLV’s… Dang fine reels for the money. They are not high end reels but they are solidly built, inexpensive and I have one I have been abusing for 4 years now, soaking in salt water, dropping, just treating like crap ( not trying to destroy it but not babying it at all) and it is still kickin like the day I took it out of the box… Not a big fan of Okuma fly rods… The TFO Professional II is a great entry level stick and solid, I like the BVK but it feels brittle to me… I should have the new TFO Mangrove in the shop here in a couple weeks as well…

I was in the exact same situation as you last week. From what I have been told (and I am a newbie to fly myself), pretty much all the reels in the $60 to $100 price range have basically the same type of drag system (SLV probably the cheapest with it) and will work well for what we want to do. I almost pulled the trigger on the SLV myself… One of the biggest reasons I ended up buying the Ross Flyrise is lifetime warranty they have on the reel. I have no worries about my setup because both the rod and the reel have lifetime warranties. I don’t plan on dropping that kind of cash again any time soon…
wow thanks clauser, serious deals there, probably going to go w/ a gray color Ross Flyrise from Charleston Angler + this $300 orvis rod for $200: http://www.flyshopcloseouts.com/index.php/fly-rods/orvis-tls-power-matrix-2-piece-fly-rod-for-8-or-9-weight-save-30.html
