What would be the ideal fly rod weight for tarpon?
10 for babys/juniors (fish up to 50lbs or so) 12 for everything else…

The weight of the rod doesn’t mean anything.
I’ll let “calibouge” explain this to you. Those numbers; 6 and 3 and 9 and 12 are just silly numbers. It’s ALL about the skill of the fly fisherman. I’m ready to learn something.
But til I get taught… the 9 will handle ANY inshore red. The 8wt will be the most universal fly rod for reds and trout. The 7wt will handle reds if they don’t run into oysters.

Oops. Sorry. Mad Mike nailed it. 10wt is is GREAT for the small tarpon. 12wt is the SAFE rod if you want to be ready for the big guy. There are some pretty nice 12wt that can cast like a 9wt. I cast one recently and am now saving up to get one.

You seem to be the “expert” on all such subjects so knock yourself out kid!
In SC nothing under a 12wt because of the depth of water. Down South, you can sometimes get away with a lighter rod depending on the water and the caliber of fisherman.

Let us know when you catch one on the fly here in the Charleston Area, not sure it has been done with a big fish out in the open waters.
I thought one was caught earlier this year in Charleston. I know some have been caught in Savannah.

I lost a 40lb tarpon quickly on a #9 last year in Tortola. So, not much.
