I’m thinking of trying my hand at fly fishing.Being new to it can some on give me ideas on rods/reels for red fishing.Im not sure about what weight rod and all I would need. Thanks for any info.
Most in our area use 8wt or 9 wt for redfish. TFO is a great entry level rod. Get a 4 piece. Reels are like any other reel; you can spend $50 or $500. Personally I don’t need an expensive reel to catch reds in the grass. I use a $50 okuma that’s been dunked more times than a bearclaw at Fritz’s breakfast nook on a sleepy Sunday morning.
Forward floating line, scientific angler among others make it. 9ft tapered leader, 16 lbs.
If you want to spend a little money, go visit the guys at Charleston Angler and throw the rods they have there. Be careful though, you can end up spending the rent check if you’re not careful. If you go the TFO route, you can be in it for less than $250.

thanks
Go to the Charleston Angler West Ashely - great people there. It’s better to spend maybe a little bit more and get what you need rather than get the wrong thing cheap.

This topic can really open a can of worms. Everyone that has been fly fishing for awhile always recommends expensive gear because quality is much better than cheap. Here’s the problem, not all anglers attempting fly fishing like it and the gear ends up stuffed and forgotten in a closet. That being said, I always recommend the best your budget allows. I started out with a $100 outfit from Bass Pro shop. Once I got the hang of it and found I enjoyed it more that conventional fishing I up graded. After 15 years I still use my original #5 Hobbs Creek outfit and am perfectly satisfied with it. For Red fish I would go at least a #8 set up, floating weight forward line and no less than 12 lb tippet.
