Fly Tyers

Any Fly Tyers out there who spin deer hair…?

Yes

yes but I don’t feel it necessary

Well, I’m interested in learning to spin deer hair, but I’m not sure what kind works better or where to get it. Any help would be appreciated…!

I spin occasionally… and in certain instances it is necessary. The technique takes a little practice, but it’s relatively simple.

You need Deer body hair. Coastal Deer body hair works best. And we sell it at The Charleston Angler in a bunch of colors. Come by the Mt. Pleasant store and I can help you out.

Plenty of instructional videos on spinning deer hair on YouTube. I assume you are going freshwater but, a redfish on a Dahlberg Diver is the S//it.

I definitely wouldn’t pass up Mike’s offer.

A dahlberg eat is definitely good stuff iFly… here is another good reason to spin hair…

Spinning hair can b a pain sometimes but I just watched a lot of vida on YouTube and practiced a lot. I made a lot of bad looking flies before I got it right. Spinning wool is pretty cool too.

Mad Mike,
Check your private messages…! Thanks…!

actually antelope is some of the very best. really bouyant and will float a saltwater hook. i use old braid cause you can pull it down tight, but you can actually overtighten and cut thru it. sometimes the middle hair on the back of a deer tail will spin up but its unpredictable. its the hollowness that makes it work. i wud start with some really long shank hooks to get the feel. packing it is also a pretty good skill. if you find the right ball point pen and disassemble it you can get a nice packer. its hard to get it tight enuff without one. trimming them is also an art. dont worry about the first dozen or so. then you wanna try stacking which gives some cool effects. trying that will make you appreciate the amount of work in a beautiful stacked bug. if you get a good one it can be hard to tie it on a little string and throw it in the water at a wild animal. i like doing it tho i wudnt claim skillz.

he’s pretty white for a fly guy

ha Mike show off … thats a (**() good lookin fly though

Hey mike thinkmi can get the recipe for that blumpkin fly
