Another PI kayak fisherman? Don’t run into many of us around here except for an occasional few during the warm months. I don’t do any flyroddin’, but get out every chance I can to see if this blind hog can find any acorns. I tossed some gulps around MI yesterday, but settled for some exercise, beautiful wx, and the lowest tides I’ve seen in quite awhile. Anyway, just wanted to give you a holler. Good luck with the flyroddin’, and leave a few for me. :sunglasses:

I have fly fished out of the yak with 9’ 8wt and 6 wt. Its not to bad you’ll get used to. I have places i get out and stand but otherwise i just drift and hit places that may hold fish. I have a rudder system so going down current/wind I dont have to paddle and can cast more.

is that rudder an add on? that would definitely help. ive seen some rigs. i may make one.
thanks
you dont need to fear me depleting the resource OC. the only limit i ever get is time.

Expensive but worth it.

I have had boats both with and without rudders. My opinion is that boats under 14’ are better off with a rudder. Mainly because shorter boats have a tendency to ‘fish’ from side to side as you paddle. The rudder helps prevent this and keep you tracked straight. Also nice to have for the drifting scenario mentioned above.

My two tarpon 160i’s do not have rudders and I do not miss them one bit. Rudder cables and their components rust, cables snap, finding parts and replacing them is a pain in the as-, I know as I’ve replaced two rudder cables! The foot pegs feel unstable once you add rudder tracks. And dam- 244$ for that rudder is outrageous, we are talking maybe 40$ worth of materials, when new 16 foot kayaks are 640 bux.

Dont get caught up with the bells and whistles of kayaking fishing. Get a 16ft sit on top, a nice paddle, a milk crate, some pvc rod holders, and you will have the best fishing kayak there is for the money.

In the yak, I always am on the fly. 9’ 8wt generaly. been playing w/ 11’ 7wt. too. I like to stand and drift to them, staking out in good locations if needed. try to keep everyting clear of the “deck” those rod holders are a pain w/ tangled line. I like to set up on a grass edge also and watch. i dont do much blind casting. check out freedon hawk kayaks- that thing is mean and is a perfect fly boat. i might sell my jonboat for that one.
