Flyfishing the surf

I imagine the circle of people that do this isn’t very large. I’m just curious what would be the best time of year to try this and what would the ideal conditions be to be successful?

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

I always wait till the whiting bite is hot and then do a little fly fishing in the surf for them. Ideal conditions are of course low wind, small surf and the clearest water you can find. Early morning or late evening works best. Most of the fish you catch will be blind casting. I would like to catch some pompano, but I have just not been able to pull it off…yet.

If you can catch a trigger on the fly, there’s no doubt in my mind that you can take a pompano too.

I do it all the time in the outer banks with an intermediate or shooting head and a stripping basket. Catch lots of blues and spanish mackerel when the water is on the clearer side and wind isnt above 20 mph. I know on Mount P there can be small sharks right in the waves and I’ve tried for them a few times with a fly but no luck. Still was exciting though!
