Flying Fish

What with all the talk about cudas and ring tails … I am inspired to ask… My neighbors are from Barbados and he swears flying fish are a delicacy there. Seen plenty off shore but wondering how to catch them. Is there an easy way? I saved him some dolphin roe and he fixed it so it tasted like sausage. He tried to explain how they cook it. He did such a good job with the roe Id like to see his butterflied flying fish ; ) Only way Ive caught them is having them jump in the boat.

LOL ^^^ i wanna go on that trip!

Use a pool net, (Long long handle)for picking up.

Great on the way back.

I think a 22lr AR style rifle with shot rounds would be the way to go.

When I was in Barbados years ago, I probably averaged 2 FF sandwichs per day! Covered with some locally made hotsauce, they are awesome. You just need to know how debone them. The women working in the fish market could carve those suckers up like a ninja.

Thanks for the replies. Just wanted to see if anyone knew how to catch them. Hes a great neighbor and chef ; )

Flying fish are great. I had a roommate whose Mother was from Barbados and her family still lived their, every time Sue would visit she would bring some home. The family had some folks that had worked for them for years and would prepare plenty for her trip home.I hoped to one day make the trip to the Island with her just to spend a few days with the cooks and learn some of their trade tricks, alas I never got there, and the old homestead has been sold and now condos take its majestic place.

Anchor on ledge at night, drop a light in the water, net the ones that haven’t jumped in the boat already.

Anyone ever heard the superstition that killing a flying fish is bad luck when out on the water? When I was in the USCG the older guys swore by that.

I’ve heard that said a while back when I mentioned the 12 gauge thing. I guess it’s kind of like a banana on a boat. I’ve killed a flying fish and had a banana on a boat and either I got lucky or it is just that… a superstition.
