Folley Beach in October

Just got word that I iwll be renting in Flooey beach. Is that area decent in mid october for the fall migration. From the beach what size rod do I need, are the fish close or do i need a 10 ft rod? Will the fish hit plugs?

I can’t help you if you can’t spell folly or Charleston correctly…

literally just LOLed…

Sorry. I didnt know you guys down south were so edumcated!! Really it was just me typing to fast because I got excited about the potential for fishing in October.

for the beach october can be pretty good. bull reds should be around, of course whiting and other smaller fish, and as long as the waters still warm you can take a crack at a big shark too. gear depends on what you want to go after. for small fish like whiting a 6-7 foot medium action rod with 12lb line is just fine. for bull reds and sharks you will want something good and heavy. spinning or baitcasting is up to you. personally all my gear is spinning and even with sharks ive never had a problem with not having strong enough gear. when i go out i usually toss a smaller rod for whiting and 2 heavy spinning rods with 400 yards of 65lb braid for bigger critters. you can definitely try lures but will probably have more luck with bait.

I’d agree with ONN. I like to have a 7’ 10-20 lb rod with a 4000 ish reel and. 20 lb brad for close stuff. You never know what you’ll catch. My longer range rod is an 11’ 15-25 lb rod with a 6000 ish reel and 50 lb braid. I like to fish two rods, the longer range one in a sand spike with cut mullet, crab, ray wing, etc and the smaller one in my hand with a hand tied double or triple drop/fish finder rig with cut mullet and shrimp. Just beyond the breakers can be a very productive area so no need to cast a mile. You could go buy those premade drop rigs but I prefer to buy a 1/4 lb spool of 50-60 lb mono, some swivels, pyramid sinkers, 1/0 and 2/0 mustad circle hooks and make my own. It comes out cheaper in the long run and there’s less hardware out there clinking around. October is a pretty productive time to fish around here so get excited. Make sure to hit a local tackle shop or two as they can show you exactly what you need and give you up to date advice on what’s biting where.
