Runnin a little behind schedule today I got to the ramp at 6:25. Sun was already up and I was sorta nervous about topwater which is what I had planned for the first bit. I ran down the bank and casted around a couple of docks and banks with the topwater, white rapala shad. Nothing. Then I paddled some more and ran up one one of the bigger creeks. A jon boater was fishing a bank I had wanted to fish so I went cruising the other side, I was planning on paddlin up a ways getting to a creeklet mouth ik of but then I saw a glorious site. Trout buating glass minnows, and small FM along the grass. I anchored up and threw the trout rig out, I had a badonkadonk LP mullet topwater lure. Threw it repeatedly, I find with this lure I get caught in the hooks on my braid a lot. I had one blowup (my first ever) but it never really felt like the fish was on. Then that’s it. Fish continue to bust schools around me up and down the bank 100 yards. Not 5 feet away a MONSTER trout at least 25" comes up and eats a couple FMs in 6" of water! amazing, he does it twice before I can get my lure back and work that area. Then I grab another rod and fish my rapala white shad topwater. Nothing what so ever on that. I start re-rigging the trout combo with a TT and BAM the monster trout strikes again. Then I throw the trout tricks around, I called Bob and discussed them used everything he told me excwpt clear water. Water was clearer at spot 1 but I was hesitant to leave thses feeding fish. Alternating bewtween the TT and DOA on a poppin cork I get nothing. Tide drops put more and fish leave. I’m paddling out lookin ffor bait, then I realized it got pretty hairy in the main channel. So much for standing and throwing the cast net for live bait I just anchor up and fish my TT, DOAs. I’m a terrible plastic fisherman for redfish so I decide to give it up. Plan was to redfish until noon but sin.ce I couldn’t get bait I gave it up. Back out by 9:30 and church at 10:30. I know less about trout than I did before. I’m so frustrated about these ffeeding t
I do well when they are feeding by the grass with a popping cork. Prefer live shrimp under one.
One of the cool things about a yak is you can get really close to them and they don’t know you’re there if you’re quiet.
I think you were on the right track with the topwater. I experienced something like this recently and found they would only strike when I got the lure right on the bank. I think they were focused on the bank since they had the bait pinned up against it. 1 ft away… No strike. 2" away … Strike
