Folly 8/18 - 21

I know this is early but Vicki and I will be down for a little relaxation. Current plan is to leave G’ville early Sunday morning and drop the yaks in the water for a little float before checking in to our hotel later that afternoon. And then float a few more days while we are there.

We normally stay at IOP and put in at the Dunes and paddle to Capers, but have put in at Bowen one other time we came down to Folly area of the big pond to float but don’t know the area very well.

Anybody interested in a couple of tag-alongs?

We are in a pair of Tarpon 120, both rigged with crates and rod holders, mine also has GPS and a depth finder. Have not found the depth finder terribly needed at the beach but in our upstate lakes (300+ deep) it is handy.

Like I said I realize this is early, and I will check back when the time gets closer but would love to paddle with some local knowledge.

And particularly for you pinkfisher, my wife would love another female to yak with. She is a great sport about it, but it is always a number of my male friends and Vicki when we do things, not many females are as adventure-ish as she is. When we sport bike ride - its Vicki and 4-5 other guy riders; when we dirt bike ride - Vicki and 5 other guys; backpacking - Vicki and the guys, get the picture.

Thanks for reading, I’ll check back.

So what are our option to drop the yaks in the water on the way to Folly after getting off I-26? Like I said above we have put in at Bowen Island once before, what other option do we have on this side of town (not that we know a lot of option in general for the Chucktown area)? It looks like there is a landing at the end Sol Legare Rd ???, any advice on this place or others. Looking for information of accessibility (high/low tide, odds my vehicle will be unmolested, fishy water, others that may be yaking in the area, etc.

From Sol Legare can kayak fish that shore line ( toward ocean) and up Green Creek. The Bowens area is good for trout, some reds and flounder too, both up toward Crosby’s and into King’s Flats so wouldn’t flee that area. Folly ramp also puts you near many oyster bars, docks, and shell beaches for the inshore slam. Black drum under the docks at Mariner’s Cay.
That depth finder will help you find the drop-offs along the riverbanks so bring it along.

My very first fish caught in Charleston in 2006 was an 18" speck off the grass line at the Bowens Ramo, from my kayak, on a chartreuse fresh water bass grub curly tail.

PM me if you head this way for some more specific kayak catchin suggestions.

Thanks stick, I pulled up a map and familiarized myself with the areas you mentioned. Does the King’s flat area drain completely at low tide?

Anybody else going to be fishing either of these areas on Sunday late morning / early afternoon ???

Ended up fishing in King’s flat area. Didn’t catch a lot but Vicki did catch her first kayak shark. It was only about two feet but she was excited. Me also, love to see her catch fish.

Did notice something that seemed odd at the time but now seems to make sense. On the way into King’s flat (higher stage of tide) there was a yak pulled off to the side by an old boat dock/oyster shell ramp with a gentleman camped out there fishing. On the way back out (low tide) I think I see why he was in that spot, still. It looks like there is an old break wall or something that goes about halfway into the creek. It appears he was set up there just waiting for fish to go out with the tide. Does this seem plausible? Not having a lot of saltwater experience with fish movement, do you think most fish leave the flat as the tide goes out?

Also noticed a sign about shelfish area. Is that one of the state allowed oyster gounds? And just what do you look for when collecting an oyster or two to go with lunch?

stick, just now saw your PM, pretty much answer my questions above, thanks for your tips, and yes as little as I seem to be able to make it down there, this area will be plenty to keep me busy, thanks for your tips, like I said with not getting down that way nearly enough, this info helps me know that I am a least fishing in an area worth fishing. Let me know if you are every in the upstate, we’ll buy you a beverage.
