Folly Beach Advise

Heading to Folly Beach in a couple of weeks and taking the kayak. I plan on fishing the inshore areas from the landing at Folly. The only salt water experience I have is renting a kayak and some cheap gear down there last year, and didn’t have much success. I was hoping to purchase a couple spinning rods for the trip, and some tackle. Any suggestion on what to purchase and advise on where to fish and what to fish with. Last year I caught a few small sharks on mud minnows and had a few fish break me off on live shrimp and mud minnows due to the drag not working on the rental rod… Any help would be appreciated, no keeping any fish, just trying to relax while the women lay out on the beach all day…
Thanks

You can easily fish for reds, trout, black drum , sheepshead, and flounder within a few hundred yards of the ramp using mud minnows or shrimp or crabs ( can buy at Crosby’s or catch) with any lightweight setup. The new bridge construction has altered some of my closest spots for now, but still lots of shell banks and docks close by. I, like many, spool inshore with braid ( 12-15) for the abrasion resistance and “feel”. Leaders are just 1-2 ft. The water is murky in the summer.
The more hardcore kayakers will hopefully chip in on rod length( casting distance vs kayak issues) but I use 6’6 around the docks and 7-7’6" with a fast tip for casting distance. A 2500 reel could serve most purposes.

Get long sleeve sun shirt, brim hat, high lens quality sun glasses, and replenish you sun screen after 1st 30 min and then every few hours. Just some unsolicited advice from an older guy that grew up in a different generation and pays the price 40+ yrs later.

Thanks for the help. It was really difficult to get any info down there last year. I will probably just pick up some decent rods at dick’s while I am down there. It will be easier than transporting my nice bass gear back and forth. Probably fish mud minnows and shrimp and try some soft plastic s also.

I dont have any honey holes on Folly river but unless you just want to buy saltwater rods and reels, i would save your money if your only going to be fishing a few days. iv been here about 3 months and i have caught fish (mainly red’s, up to 30 inches long) on my bass pro qualifier 1000 spinning reel with 80 yrds of 12lb braid and a 7 foot qualifier rod with relative ease. Just make sure to wash them down with fresh water after each trip. I also bought a cheap Penn Fierce 3000 and it does a good job too.

You can also catch the fish stickman listed below from the surf too but beware using small tackle out there b/c sharks and Bull reds may put a hurting on the light weight stuff (not to mention it wont cast 3-4 oz weights needed for surf).

Make a post before you come down, im sure you wouldnt have trouble finding a fishing partner

thanks. i just dont want to travel with my bass gear. too many opportunities to break or damage my good gear. just getting out while the women are worshiping the sun. i will post up when we are going, and anyone wants to show us the ropes, that would be great. havent planned on surf fishing, gave my surf rods to my brother for his vacation. if i do any fishing out of the kayak, i will probably just fish at the little bait shop across tthe bridge.

If you are on the ramp facing the water there is a couple of good docks to fish about a mile down on the right on the bend. The one with the red roof is the real good one but they are all decent.

Thanks for all the help, we had a great trip I will post a report when I get caught up on work. It was too crowded and too much boat traffic at the folly landing so we put in at Bowens island and the ramp near misquito beach.
