Folly Beach backwater

Hi,
1st post, I’m going to Folly beach in August, I would like to take my little bass boat and fish the back water. Bad idea? Good idea? Just want a shot at some flounder. It looks like sandbar city on Google map.

thanks,
brettw

Yeah towards morris island you really need to be careful. You can catch an inshore slam when you fish creek mouths and docks my friend. Go up on of the 3 big creeks on the ji side and fish the creek mouths on c rigs and poppin corks and live bait. Pull up to a dock and toss your mm, fm, menhaden, shrimp out. 1 rod on each part of the dock (walkway, deck, ffloatin dock, boat lift) wait about 15 minutes. If no bits pick a different one. You can stay in the main river on your boat if the wind isn’t ridiculous. Hit me up if you have any more questions. I pretty much exclusively fish from folly boat ramp

Yak, he puts out 4 rods, he might get an inshore slam all at once and not be able to reel them all in

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

I don’t know how many days you are going to be in Folly, but you should really go exploring at low tide and remember where things are. It is sandbar city going to the stono and oyster bed city past the docks going the other way.

There has been a lot of sand movement around buoy 15 and I couldn’t get in Coles creek at low tide yesterday. It is my favorite bait spot.

As far as flounder go, you better fish the harbor or around sullivans island. There are no fish in the Folly.

I caught a Folly slam Sunday morning- a pinfish, a small sheepshead, and a toadfish. All on fiddlers.

sounds exciting, the pin fish is really what I’m looking for !

This is the S turn right after the docks heading to the lighthouse. I have found the best water is to the RH side heading out. You really need to see there at low tide. Hazzards galore. I traced you out a semi-accurate route. Keep your hand on the throttle and thumb on the trim.

Next stretch is ok. A little shallow but I take the top route at the 2 little islands after the hard RH turn. Note: all that green on the map is bad news. It looks real nice at high tide but its not.

I put the crosshairs on a nasty sandbar out in the middle. It’s deceiving and looks like good water.

Finally the home stretch to the lighthouse inlet. If you go to the left, watch the flats. They will be bone dry at low tide but at high look like giant fish containing lakes. If you want, I can show you where governors cut is and you can get to the harbor that way. All the maps are continuous, I tried to overlap a little so you can see that.

I hope I get some good karma for this. I have been hung up in there, chewed props, pumped mud through my outboard, and broke a paddle learning this stuff the hard way. If nothing else it is a beautiful ride.

Matt,
Thank you so much. This would be a good Folly beach sticky. I will be as careful. Are the circled numbers buoys? Certainly not childs play out there. I better take a pole to push off with.
Frame no. 3 shows the little cut through that I will use to get back and forth to the 2d row of houses. I see you left it blue. I hope this means it will be there during low tide.

don’t make me pull your sticks up at Govt Cut again…:imp:

Last time I went through there it looked like a PVC pipeyard washed up in there. You would think SCDOT would put a sign there already.

Brett, those marks are waypoints I had to put in navionics to show a path. The colors are what the program does as well, I just took screen shots from the app on my phone.

as mentioned above the absolute best way to find your way around is go at dead low tide, watch others coming and going, mark a breadcrumb trail on your GPS and pay attention…I love making that Lighthouse Creek, First Sister Creek, Little Folly Creek, Folly River, Rat Island Creek back to Lighthouse Creek run…God’s country back in there…

wish i lived there already.
I use to fish the Chesapeake a lot. So much fun.
thanks again,
Brett

It is beautiful scenery out there, but no fish. I think most of the fish are in Shem Creek.

Yes it is beautiful. I don’t see any fish, so I’ll look elsewhere.

There are fish if you know where to find them.

Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

got fresh battery cables for those that refuse to eat,

I read in an article of Salt Water Angler that free roaming electrons in a saline solution will encourage a lazy fish to bite.
