Folly Beach next week

Annual trip to Folly next week. I’ll be land bound this trip unless I manage to get out with a guide one day. My two boys (9 & 7) can’t stop talking about fishing. To hear them talk, sounds like they plan to feed the family all week with their catch!!

I think I have a pretty good plan for the surf and remember some good looking, skinny water with swash bars, cuts, etc. that I’ll be hoping I can find again. We stay near the pier, so that’s always an option (or fishing under it…we got a nice black drum right in close along the pilings last summer). But I’ve really fallen in love with the North End and plan to revisit it at least once or twice (likely early mornings but the tide will be a factor). Last year I had a big hook up that ran hard and eventually broke off (shark?) and caught a variety of other small fish. I remember seeing a lot of fiddlers (particularly at night) on the jetty there…been thinking I might grab a few and try dropping a line right over the rocks near high tide with hopes that sheepshead come peck away at those rocks? Anyone ever had success with that…or have any other tips for that end of the island?

Also been reading through the forums that folks wade out behind the county park to the south looking for tailers, targeting trout, or trying to net shrimp from the reeds. I haven’t done much on that other end of the island…worth trying to fit in a trip? And is that a solo adventure or do you think the boys could tag along (tide permitting)? Do you actually drive into the park and go on from there? I know it closes at dark…could be limiting for me…

Sorry for the long post. Just so many possibilities (even from shore) and my mind starts running full speed with hopes and dreams the closer we get to the trip! We love getting down to Charleston…envy you guys who can call that fishery “home!”

Much as I have been surfing and reading on this board, only this morning caught on that there is a specific surf/pier section! Gonna re- post in that forum, but would still love to hear from anyone with tips/advice, thanks!

You seem to be looking at or considering all the right things. As you know with fishing, it’s a lot about right time and right place. You have a lot of bait options with Crosby’s Shrimp and Seafood nearby (live mud minnows and shrimp, and fresh mullet and crab chunk). May want to reach out to stan that you’ll see on the surf/pier blog. He lives on Folly and does a lot of shark fishing and may be willing to help you get your kids hooked up on something.

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■. I’ll watch for Stan but haven’t gotten any response (yet) on the post in surf/pier. Will definitely plan to stop at crosby’s to bait up and check the reports! My dreams and ideas are no doubt ambitious given the the timeframe and the alternate family activities, but I’m sure to get some time on the beach and definitely plan to hit the North End. Still trying to decide if I’ll try wading into the folly river (from the county park, i’d guess?) either to target reds or try to net some shrimp…but that may be the one plan that gets cut for lack of time (and experience) when all is said and done…

Btw, no idea how that ebay link got in my post…is it just me? Looks like I’m promoting plush toy sales somehow…???
