Folly Beach

Hey Guys, New to this forum, I usually post over on KFS.com. I’m sure you get these posts from every tourist that comes to visit the South Carolina shore, however, I’d really appreciate some local advice. I’m going to be staying on Folly Beach 5/15th-21st. I saw the post about the BARF outing on the 19th and am most likely going to be there for that. I’m bringing my WS T120 and tons of tackle. I’m planning on targeting reds/trout/flounder behind Folley Beach between the Stono River and Lighthouse Inlet. I have lots of spoons, soft plastics and hard baits, I was hoping you guys could help me narrow them down. I’ve heard shrimp imitations are pretty effective, so I was gonna get some Powerbait shrimp. How about Gulp?? Any particular color or style? At $6 a bag I didn’t want to grab the wrong stuff. As far as tides, up here outgoing is best, how about on the flats?? Any tackle shops on the island?? Anyone who would like to join me is more then welcome to give me a holler, I should be on the water everyday.

Thanks again. -adam

Nearest bait would be Crosby’s- on left about 1 mi. or so back to James Island; open 6-6. Has variety of frozen bait and mud minnows. Limited tackle available. Folly Beach Piggly Wiggly, another mile past Crosby’s sells clams. All the usual soft and hard baits you can give action to work here.

If you launch from public ramp at bridge you can fish all the docks down the entire island. If heading downriver, cross and fish up Oak Creek. If heading upriver cross and fish creeks, flats, oysters back to Little Oak Island and Long Island. If energetic, head up Folly River to where it becomes Rat Creek and fish you’re way back to Lighthouse Inlet. If you have kayak wheels, fish one way and get ride to pick you up at other end.

I’ll be in Calif. that week, otherwise I’d love the company. I see very few kayakfishers out that way.

Thanks Stickman, I picked up a nautical chart of the area, I’ll definitly make note of the areas you mentioned. -adam

Small Boat, Big Fish!

gulp shrimp are pretty good. rig them weedless or on a jighead. let em sit on the bottom or bump em real slow across the bottom. rootbeer gold seems to be a good color. get your hands on some mud minners and you will have a good time. work them under a eqalizer in shallow water(less than 6 feet-ish) or on the bottom in deeper water. other than spoons and powerbait shrimp, everything you have sounds good. use doas instead of powerbaits. hope you catch em’!!!

Got him!!!

Thanks guys I can’t wait to get down there!! Is an eqalizer a float?? I’ll have to get some DOAs when I get down there, I know it’s what all those tournment redfish guys rave about, but they don’t sell them up here. Anyone try Redfish Magic?? Looks like a spinnerbait with a grub on it. Thanks again. -adam

The redfish magic is a great lure. But be careful with it if you are throwing on a school of reds. I think it tends to spook alot of fish. I really like throwing the gulp shrimp and jerk shad. These lures make a much quiter splash. At low tide the reds can get spooky.

bring em in

All the advice I’ve seen so far is good. I would also pick up some gulp peeler crabs in the blue pepper neon color. I’ve had pretty good results throwing these into low tide flats where I know redfish are present. I rig it on a 3/0 owner circle hook with a piece of splitshot about 6" up from the hook and give it a slight twitch every once in a while. There are some pretty good size (overslot) reds in the area. Good luck.

Looks like I need pick up some Gulps. Great advice guys, thanks again!! Gonnawin that’s a nice looking trout, bet it tasted good! Anyone gonna be on the water next week?? -adam
