I have just recently moved to Folly Beach and I’m struggling a bit to find the flounder. I’m originally from NC and the gigging near Morehead City has always been great with no problem finding flounder. Since arriving in Folly I have gigged twice and that was this past weekend and I have been shut out. In NC we gigged on the incoming high tide and after. I was told by some locals that the time to gig here is a few hours before low tide sets and a couple hours after. On high tide I couldn’t see a thing because the water was so dirty, Low tide I had no problems seeing the bottom, just no flounder. Any suggestions or tips some of you local flounder giggers can give me would be greatly appreciated!
After a rain or flood tide, the water is typically dirty here. All the junk and mud gets washed down in the water and its usually tough to find clean water. We usually go two hours before and two hours after low tide and stay away around full and new moons as the tides are larger. We don’t gig on a hightide, but that doesn’t mean it cannot be done. Gigging here can be a lot of trial and error, keep moving around and you’ll find them. Clear water is half the battle in Charleston. Good luck.
