folly river for the 1st time

My father and I are looking to fish on the folly river for the 1st time. We’re looking to target bonnethead and whatever else is biting. I’ve read there is a productive spot if you hang left from the landing and fish the mouth of the first major creek on the right ? We’re in a smaller boat so depending on the weather I don’t know if we would be able to make it out near the lighthouse. Any suggestions on locations ? Other species ? Preferred bait ? We haven’t had much luck shark fishing this year we usually stick to drum island and castle pickney on calm days.

The bonnethead love blue crabs, i have been consistently catching 3.5 -4’ around the lighthouse. (any of the creeks that connect to the main river going to the lighthouse are great spots, small boat is just fine). I would recommend using the blue crabs over cut mullet and frozen shrimp as the Rays wont go for the crabs. Catching rays is annoying and costly when they usually swallow your hook! Crosby’s on Folly road will have frozen finger mullet and frozen shrimp but they havent had blue crabs in a few weeks. Huff’s on Folly Road after the Sunoco has had the blue crabs.

Good luck…

Weirdfish, look down a few posts in this Inshore Discussion tab at the “Help with Folly fishing” topic, I put a google earth screen shot showing a couple spots where i have been catching the bonnetheads…
Hope it helps…

Thanks ejsulli2000 ! I don’t mind catching rays, they’re not the most fun to fight or clean but they do taste good if you broil them. I’ve already picked up some mullet and shrimp, will hit huffs in the morning. The screen shot will great help, I’ll post a report if we have any luck!

You’d be better off eating the crabs, mullet and shrimp

Just messing with you, it’s all about having fun :sunglasses:

Please do post your trip details. My buddy and I are following some tips from my boss out in the Stono Saturday, we are chasing the reds like a fiend chasing crack!! If all else fails, you will see a 16’ Scout up near the spots I told you about trying to get a bonnet on the line, love to hear and feel that sound of the drag singing!!!

Watch that weather!

I always hit up the crabbers out on the water for a dozen or so, they are more than happy to sell them to you cheap for bait

lots of small sharks in the stono from the airport on out to the inlet, in the kiawah river too

'bout time

Good luck on the reds, yeah I love fighting sharks, first one I caught was a puny hammerhead maybe a foot if it was lucky but I swore it was a monster by the fight hahah!
