I hAVE A 2 ACRE PLOT THAT I AM THINKING OF PLANTING SOY BEANS BECAUSE I HAVE NOT HAD SUCCESS WITH WHITETAIL INSTITUTE STUFE. COMMENTS
They work well, don’t rule out clay peas. They are pricey now a days but as long as you can get em past the second set of leaves will stand a bunch of grazing. Plus they are very good table fair and not much out there won’t eat them. Mix in some rape and turnip seeds .
If they make it get an old feed bag and pick a bunch of the dried ones to plant next year. You’ve also got a good chance to have a good stand by just bushhoging and discing back in next spring. Don’t plant them too thick one mature plant will take up a couple square feet.
Soybeans will work very well if you can keep the deer off of them for the first week or so. We have been using a mixture by Evolved Harvest for few years. It contains soybean (which will regrow), sunflowers, grain sorgum. I think it’s called Maximize. We have also planted vetch along with this mixture w/ great results. Not mention we have had some great dove shoots in some small 2-3 acre plots, and the turkey love it. The soil needs to be packed and moist. Hope this helps!!
Was planning to plant today but I’m pretty sure my property could be considered ocean front right now. This time of year I plant something easy and cheap like soybeans and cowpeas. It holds the deer there and keeps them coming to food. As the season starts and temperature drops, I tend to plant rape, clover, and winter peas. And I keep corn on the ground year round.
Personally I try not to use any of those brand name manufactured seeds. I was raised on the belief that if your going to eat them then feed them what God intended for them to eat.
Just my 2 Cents… Good Luck!

Thanks guys
Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.
Not sure if anyone out there has tried them, but rape is a very good green. Also Rape seeds are what Canola oil is made from.
They say the new hot thing is sun hemp… Grows easily and gets very high…
I use soybeans and cow peas mixed…

Never heard of it until you just posted it. Will the deer eat it? All I see about it is using as a soil builder and cover crop.
They say the deer love when it is young and short but use it as cover later… expensive also.

My father planted some last year and the deer ate it like crazy. I think it was quiet expensive, but he had good results. I believe he purchase the seed from Wannanmaker Seed Co. You may want to notify the local law enforcement prior to planting…
