Read this and see how you feel. If anyone could attend this meeting or have their opinion voiced that would be great.

Below is a news release produced by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) concerning possible substantial reductions in both vermilion snapper and gag grouper catch. According to studies by the SAFMC vermilion and gag are overfished and as a result catches of both are proposed to be reduced by 61% for vermilion and by about 50% for gags.
According to SAFMC data, to achieve a 60% reduction in vermilion catch would require a one fish bag limit with a 12” size limit, which needless to say would be financially catastrophic for the head/charter boat businesses.
The SAFMC will be conducting a series of “scoping” meetings up and down the coast to get input from fishermen and boat operators about moving forward with additional regulations on both vermilion and gags.
I think it is very important that people show up to voice their opinions at these meetings. The fishery council needs to know what the fishermen are seeing as far as catch, and what these kinds of proposed catch reductions would do to both small businesses and fishing communities. I would also urge you to write the SAFMC with your comments by September 17th.
Please help spread the word and let me know if you have any questions.

Council Seeks Input on Measures Needed for Gag and Vermilion Snapper
Reductions in harvest needed to end overfishing within the year
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is holding a series of 6 public scoping meetings to solicit public comment on an amendment to reduce both commercial and recreational harvest of gag grouper and vermilion snapper. Recent stock assessments show that overfishing is occurring for the
I would like to add / ask a couple of things.
Ask:
- This report and information is based on the southern waters, not the local reef by reef informtion and catch data?
- What ear marks the population change to have this rule changed again?
Add:
- Would someone who is much the better writter than I draft a letter that interesting persons could use as a form to send to the ruleing party?
- Could the local captains and rec fishmen have on hand records of catches and data concerning the local area, so that it could be provided to the ruleing party?
Wind from the West, fish bite the best.
Wind from the South blows bait in their mouth.
North or East, take extra beer.</font id=“size1”>
I dont know the answers to your questions. Allen from the Thunderstar passed this on to me post on here, and try to get some support. I know that a bunch of the data has come from Florida. So although the fishing may be great here the stocks are down elsewhere. I havent done a lot of bottom fishing in the last two years, but what I have done has been great.

1 gag and 1 vermillion with gas at $3 per gallon… makes bottom fishing a thing of the past.

As of last week, they had not made ANY recommendations. That’s straight from their mouths. They said that their meeting to discuss options was this week. Anything else is likely heresay.
