$$ for fishermen not to fish

If any of these “fishermen” receive a check and then cash it, they are just a sad excuse of a man/woman!! This is absurd, to say the least!!

Just an experiment. Yeah…

Hummmmm? I wonder if that offer is good, for nonresident license’s???
I would take $500 for not fishing MA, not that I ever had any intention of doing so. Without looking it up, does anyone know how much a license up there would cost? Just a thought! If the government paid nonresidents not not fish, the survey could get screwed up really easily! That being said, if I lived and fished there it would be a different story. I think the people living there, are going to figure out a way to make some money and still go fishing! Maybe that is why NOAA needs the sportsfisher they bought on the taxpayers dime. To be the Devils Advocate, would it be better to pay a few or impose a WMA and punish all?

I usually try to see both sides of these things, even if it’s just to know your enemy, but I don’t think there is any understanding this. Has got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of. And NOAA has $145,000 laying around for this experiment, with $75k specifically allocated to be given away?! Doing this “so officials can gauge the value people put on the right to fish”</font id=“size2”>?

So they can gauge how much we’ll fight if they try to take it away, maybe? They need to take that $75k and hire someone with a brain for a while. Hell, even buying gas for their party boat would be a better use!

I’d send my wife and kids out to buy a license! Like the artical says you have better odds winning this, than playing the lottery! I see no good coming from this survey.

This is INSANE! All they need to do is look at boat registrations for the cost of an average boat, calculate the cost of tackle, divide by the useful life and figure in the operating cost (gas, bait, and repairs) and you have a good idea on what folks are willing to spend for fishing. You don’t need to throw away tax dollars on a stupid a** “study”. We have got to stop the insanity!

I think they are trying to determine the value to the angler as Wolfie pointed out… not how much it costs. Don’t like that direction.

I think the value should be judged by the number of licensees sold not by how many would give them up. If I didn’t want a license I wouldn’t buy one in the first place. Maybe they would learn more by a quick survey asked by the license seller during the sale.

  1. How often do you fish the coastal area?
  2. Do you fish from a boat or the shore?
  3. What type of fish do you target?
  4. Would you support changes in laws to help the Cod fish population?
  5. Would you vote me out of office for being a idiot by bribing you not to fish?

Most if not all license applications are on line so spend the money to create the survey program then they can continue to ask the questions every year. And just think we vote these type of people in those positions to make stupid decisions.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Sure, turn in your license for $500. Then, use that money to buy a license that cover’s the whole boat!

They are doing this to being identifying the cost/breaking point for rec catch shares

Holy Crap!
This is the one of the biggest wastes of money and most retarded ideas i’ve heard of.
If i needed $500 then i cannot afford to fish offshore anyway,so why would i buy a liscense to start with…are you kidding me.
If i was actually willing to give up a season for that little bit of money than i’m not a offshore fisherman to start with. So who are they actually targeting. If the Survey doesn’t show 100% rebuke of the idea i will be shocked. I agree with lynn if anybody cashes these checks then they should be forced to give up there american citizenship along with it. ASSBAGS and i mean the survey jerkoffs and anybody who cashes one of these checks.

(Paquette said it would cost the government a lot of money to persuade him not to fish).

A million dollars in cash, he said. Giving up that right is not worth anything less.

Above is a quote taken from a guy interviewed for the article(see last sentence of the article)
Putting a cash number on the god given right to fish has nothing to do with a mans desire to fish. Most people don’t offshore fish because they cannot afford to.
So i ask myself if a million is my number or ten million and i got that money what the hell would i do with it if i couldn’t fish?

My question is this - are they going to pay the local tackle shops, guides, boat dealers etc. etc. for the money that is lost when we don’t fish? These guys are truly a bunch of Yo Yo’s! The scary part of this will be when somebody figures out how to beat the system and this just once again becomes a government subsidy costing us millions!
