Foster Creek Advice

Hey everyone, I’m new to this site and to South Carolina but have been fishing my whole life and have fished all over the world. I have been Kayak fishing for a good couple of years now.

I had some questions I was hoping someone could help me out with.

-Are there any good sized catfish in Foster Creek?
-Does anyone have any Foster Creek catfishing advice?
-Is there a limit on how many hooks you can have on each rod or a limit on how many rods you can have in the water at once?

I am thinking about taking the kayak out there and targeting them this weekend.

My plan is to use a few different baits; chicken liver, cut bait, shrimp, night crawlers and I was thinking of using some dip bait too to see what works best. I also have some Catfish chum I was thinking of using.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

As far as I know there is no limit on how many hookes/rods from a boat. In my opinion there are better places to fish for catfish:( than foster creek. If I was targeting from kayak, I would head downstream from oakbrook landing.
Chicken liver is the way to go!

Where is the Oakbook Landing? Is that on the Ashley?

I live on the Naval Weapons Station, about 5 minutes away from the Bushy Park Landing, Foster Creek is right next to my house so I figured I would give it a shot.

I am thinking about leaving a couple of lines in the water over night to see if there are any cats swimming around in there. Will probably drop them in tomorrow evening.

What about lake Moultrie, any good catfishing up that way?

Fished for catfish all night last night in Foster Creek, didn’t even get a bit.

Must not be any catfish in there.

Anyone have any suggestions on were I can go to catch some?

There are big cats in Moultrie. Someone on here can give you some tips, it’s been a long time since I fished that way.

I was thinking of fishing over near the dam up there this weekend, or maybe over by short stay.

I have caught quite a few catfish on the saltwater side of Bushy Park, above the saltwater line, which is that landing. They are coming down from the lakes. I don’t think there are a lot of them, and I was not targeting them. I caught a monster one here…http://g.co/maps/dkyuq
Unfortunately you cannot fish there in a yak, I could not get an anchor to hold and the current will spin you like crazy. We spin in circles every time we go, but it can be a productive spot. I would try a little farther up, every report I have heard from Foster Creek has been Bream and Crappy, no catfish.

I saw there was a boat landing up Bushy Park rd near Cypress Gardens. Looks like a canal or something, anyone catch catfish up that way?

I think I might just start going to the Lake that is probably going to be my best bet.

Used to fish Wilson’s landing just below the dam quite a bit and always had good luck. There’s a deep hole not far from the boat ramp that always produced some decent sized fish. Current is pretty strong though and probably not the place to go if you are concerned about snakes, also if you hear the alarm from the dam you need to get out pretty quick before they start releasing water.

Lake Moultrie has catfish…I have drifted for them in the lake with success - of course, that was with a pontoon boat. I have yet to target the big cats in the yak, but I imagine the same techniques will work - just have to figure out the best places to go. All around Short Stay is productive water. Get a lake map, one that shows the old river channel. Look for cuts and drop-offs on a fishfinder if you got one. Water near dam is around 75’ - I have caught catfish between the deep water of the dam area and the shallows around Lyons Beach, just drifting bait on the bottom. I might head up that way in a couple weeks to do some kayak fishing - I’ll PM you if I do.

I paddled foster creek a few years ago in the late spring. The gators were paired up along the bank… lots of pairs… as I passed each pair, one of the two(the male I assume) would slide into the creek and trail me at about 40 yards. After a few turns I had a convoy of gators swimming behind me.
Not good to fish with all those eyes staring at you.
My exit back through the gauntlet was at a much swifter pace.

A good place to catfish is under the I-95 bridge on the city of santee side…you can put in at the opposite side but it is about 1 1/2-2 mile paddle to the other side…the old I-95 bridge area on the city of santee side is right next to the main lake channel and you can catch some monster there

I am going to go up to the Lake this weekend and try my luck from shore.

Probably going to fish early evening to maybe midnight or so.
