I’m tired of getting rained out and I’ve been on fire offshore lately. Does anybody have a suggestion for a good, durable brand of rain gear? Most of the stuff I’m seeing would end up with blood stains or it is made of material that would tear after a few trips.
There are lots of good ones out there. Lots of folks like the Grundens. You need to spend a little money and get something heavy enough to keep you dry in cold ocean spray. I bought a pair of the Cabella’s Alaskan Guide bibs and jacket; they are three years old and still going strong. I will probably get another pair this year. Heavy PVC works best for me because the cloth fabric ones seem to saturate and leak after awhile.
My dad and I both just purchased the Stormr Strykr bibs and jacket. We fished in a steady 25 mph, 43* day in them so far and we were both impressed. Really comfortable gear. We will be trying them out again in the morning…
i personally like the viking waterman gear… i have the full bib’s and jacket… it works well. they do breath"sorta" ive been out in winyah bay in the dead of winter in them for 8+ hours and never really thought about it…
super easy to clean… lay on ground use a soft brush and some soapy water and rinse… hang up for the next day.
Carhartt makes great PVC gear. I have the surrey rain jacket for the everyday rain in Alaska in the summertime and if my Grundens bibs bite the dust, I will replace them with the Carhartt version. Cheaper and just as durable.
I wear a pair of Marmot rain pants and layer up under my Patagonia rain jacket for winter kayak trips. Both can be found at half moon outfitters or backpacker. Palmetto state in MtP has frabil winter fishing bibs and jackets displayed in a recent post too.
The only type of rain gear that is fully waterproof forever is PVC stuff. All the fabric stuff, including Goretex, will eventually soak up and hold water letting some in. You can buy 3 pairs of good PVC gear for one pair of fancy fabric stuff and the PVC will also outlast any goretex stuff you’ll find. I’ve got both and for real protection in harsh weather, I always go to the PVC stuff.

We carry some affordable bibs and jackets by Frabill. We have sold quite a few of them thus far, and nothing but good things to say about them! Just a suggestion.
