I’m glad to see that Merc doesn’t get as much of a bum rap elsewhere in the country as they get around these parts. While I like both brands, I’ve always thought the negative sentiments that I’ve always heard about Mercs was overrated, because they’ve served me quite well and fire right up and pur like a kitten every time, even after sitting for months in the winter.

Florida is the boating capitol of the world and mercs are the predominate engine down there…guides and tournament saltwater guys mainly prefer mercs…why is that?
Possibly because they are fine products and the negative stuff we hear about Mercs is mostly just hype and brand rivalry talk (which I have always thought was the case). I mean, I know some people had some problems, but there have been problems with all outboard brands, and I think a lot of the Optimax problems people had were from not using the right oil. I ain’t a mechanic, though.
BTW, I bought a '99 Corvette back in 2000, and the video that came with the car said that Mercury Marine made the Corvette engine. I can tell you that it’s one fiiiine engine. That model had 345 HP and got 28 MPG on the hwy. Brutally fast car. For some reason, it seems like some folks have to love one brand and hate the other. I never really understood that. I think it’s just human nature. Same with Chevy versus Ford. I’ve had Fords and Chevys and couldn’t care less about the brand as long as it does what I want it to do, and they all pretty much do that for me.

My boat came with a mercury and it isnt worth repowering but I have had no issue with mine. Of course it is pre-optimax. I use it in salt and fresh quite frequently. Oh, speaking of that. Lee, I need to call and update my policy. I bought a new trailer

I would add Suzuki to the mix. Its my understanding they are the #1 outboard seller outside of the US. They were pretty much the pioneer of the modern 4 strokes.
I have had yamahas(40 2 stroke, 60 4 stroke, 250s ox 66, 90 2 stroke, 25 4 stroke, and 250 4 stroke) mariner 25 and 75 2 stroke. Ficht 90, suzuki 115s 4 stroke, omc 115s two stroke.
All of the 4 strokes were fantastic, with the exception of the 25 yamaha (it was a slow dog)
The ficht has probably been the best motor for combination of speed, reliablity, and efficency.
The mariners were garbage always breaking down. But fast.
115 johnsons were worst motors ever.
ox 66s cost a lot of money, did not like them that much
40 and 90 yamahas ran flawless for years, other than carbs.
That being said, for a small skiff type boat, I would run e tec, for larger deep v boat, yam or suzuki 4 strokes.

mercs and suzukis now.
Call up Sea Hunt and get the scoop about why they are the number one selling saltwater boat in the nation.
Also Honda was the pioneer of four strokes not suzuki.

WD, I will continue to buy Mercs as long as they have an active racing program. Racing improves the breed. Mercs are probably the most advanced engines available at this time and for the forseeable future. Yamaha would not be where they are today without Mercs guidance early in their outboard manufacturing. Have you noticed the similarities in Yam and Merc gearcases? wanna guess where that technology came from? I understand that you have a vested interested in Yamaha, but don’t discount Mercury as a performance and reliability leader. All of the manufacturers had teething problems with their early DFI and 4strk engines. The current Mercs are every bit as reliable and outrun all of the Jap motors. I love my 175 ProXS opti. Buy American.

Are you serious? Yamaha built mercurys four strokes for the longest time. It was not till recently they branched off to build the verados. No one ever argued mercury was not the fastest motor but that is their niche in the marine world.

Like I stated: You have a vested interest in Yamaha. I am absolutely serious. Both North American manufacturers utilized Jap powerheads while they tooled-up their plants, so what? Don’t get me wrong, Yamaha builds a fine product. However, I think that your opinion of Mercury is outdated. Now, go get yourself another tall glass of that sweet Yamaha Kool Aid.

There you go again with fictional propaganda. Stick to what you know so you don’t lose credibility. I pay 30 a gallon for Opti oil, used to pay 25. Yamalube is over $50 a gallon at West Marine. Of course you can get it cheaper elsewhere
I generally don’t listen to retailers when they are criticizing a competitor’s product.

well your getting a deal on some opti oil and why would you buy yama lube from west marine when it is under $20 bulk gallon and $24 a gallon at yamaha dealers.

For the same reason that you think he would $50 for Opti oil when he can get it for $25 or $30…

No, I already commented on that one (Grove Slam). That’s the one I was talking about and Scoutin was responding about, but he posted another video from the Yellowfin website. I can’t see that one. Can you see that one he posted in response to me (on the Yellowfin site)? Read my dialogue with Scoutin on pages 1 and 2, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Not sure why the vid won’t play for me. Probably need to download Quicktime or something.
