Sad to say, I hit one yesterday. So beautiful, couldn’t just leave it there, so brought home and froze. Any fly fishermen want it? Thought the tail would be great tying material…anyways had to try…beautiful creatures. Black and grey mix…huge bushy tale. yes I posted in the fly fishing section also
When I was younger,we sold squirrel tails to the Mepps lure company for the Aglia spinner baits. I still use them.
Nice gesture! I hate seeing such things go to waste also. I tie a lot of flies with the Squirrel tails & the fur. Perhaps someone close to you will take you up on the offer. That tail hair works well on small jigs too.
I checked into selling to Mepps one time when I did a lot of hunting & unless you have a large number of them, not the best option. I see them sometimes on Ebay being sold for $3 each, and Mepps pays a lot less. I think last I saw it was around .35 per tail.
Where did you hit it? I haven’t seen one in the lowcountry in 15 years

Only time that I have seen them recently was at Botany Bay. That was a few months ago. I forgot how big they can get and cool looking they are, especially compared to our normal tree rats. Good on OP trying to help a fly fisherman out.
Lots of them on Stono Ferry golf course.

LOTS of them on Daniel Island as well
I used to see them from Awendaw to Walterboro, but it has been forever since I’ve seen one! That’s what happens when you’re a plant monkey lol. Glad to hear they’re still around.

Skin it and cook it.
Got a barn owl waiting on some taxidermy as I type.
See them quite often in any of the lowcountry WMAs I hunt. Saw 3 at the Wilson’s landing 2 weeks ago. Saw 1 cross the road at Black’s fish camp last week. Seen 4 at Botany Bay this summer, and got a picture of a pure black one right at the Fox Squirrel Crossing sign on the main road.
How 'bout this?

sorry, was away. River Rd. out near Sugar Hill landing. A family of solid black ones near there as well, see them every time I drive through there.
