free diving/spearfishing 6/9/10

Took 2 buddies out that had never done any freediving or spearfishing in their life. Both good athletes and picked it up quick. We started at the shipping cans and moved from there out to the Chas 60. Visibility was incredible for the 60 and I was able to dive from the boat straight down to the 240 barge. Not many fish around though but fun nontheless. Went back to a few cans we hadn’t checked yet and had some more luck. I have a badass custom wood gun made in Bali Indonesia. I pulled the trigger on a 50lb aj with that gun and the aj wrapped the line and shaft around the chain for the can. The shaft was wrapped 3 times like a metal corkscrew. It was about 35ft down and for numerous reasons regarding safety I ended up cutting the line. I will have to wait till my August Bali trip to get a new shaft which sucks. Ended the day with 3 nice Ajs, 3 sheeps, and 10 spades. All fish got a various cans in the shipping channel.

Ordered a helmet camera waterproof to 180ft so will have some pretty sweet video to post soon.

Charles, where did you get the camera from? I’ve been looking for one!

i just got the the GoPro HD surf cam which has attachments for surfboard and surfhelmet( good waterproof shock resistant helmet). I’ve heard the quality is really good and for the price, i will be pumped if its really good. I will use it next week and will post video and pics on here. It has a high memory capacity as well. The old GoPros were only waterproof to 100’ but this new one is 180 so we will see how it does

this freediving “business” sounds a little “funny” to me charles

Dont feel so bad. Last summer we were on a inshore wreck and there was no fish besides ajs. So I got board and decided to free shaft a aj. I only free shaft and carry to extra spears on my gun. I ended up shooting the fish 3 perfect shots and he still swam off with all three 150$ worth.

Cool. The price does look pretty attractive. Gotta get me one!

Here is a link to a video of a guy using the GoPro cam. He is 10 miles off of Sebastian Inlet, FL chumming around a can. The bull shark seems to be a nice one. I especially like it when he stabs the barracuda to bring the bull back in.

Those cameras are awesome. I e-mailed the company about two weeks ago about selling them at the shop, but I haven’t heard anything yet. A buddy of mine uses one in cold water off La Jolla, CA. His shoots great video, and it hasn’t flooded yet, down to 120’.

Charles, we definitely need one before we try to shoot the 160’ triple ledge! Also, was that your 22’ Mako breaking through the jetties this morning around 7:30? I saw a speargun on board, I was on the 33’ Hydrasport just in front of you. Did you guys do any good?

that was definitely us and but we weren’t on a 22ft boat…haha. anyhew that hydrasport was badass and we took some poeple from morrocco bottomfishing
