Free Jumping Billfish - KIAWAH REEF

6-17-07
Not a report from very far offshore, but I wanted to throw it up anyway. Headed out to the Kiawah Reef this morning. Trolled for Spanish early then bottom fished later in the day. Spanish bite was slow even though just a few days ago it was just about non-stop. One barracuda, one Spanish, one little tunny, standard as many as you feel like catching BSB’s.
The highlight of the day was when we were bottom fishing and I looked out and saw a free jumping billfish. It was about 500 yards away from our boat and 600 to 700 yards away from about 5 other boats. It jumped about 15 times in a row; I know someone else out there had to see it. Any one else out there 6-16-07? First time for seeing that for me.
Also, checked out by the coast guard, everything was in order, and we were on our way in 5 min. Thanks coasties for keep a heads up.

im a no brainer

We were out there on 6/16/07, didn’t see anything jumping, but we did see several very large groups of bait fish out there.
It was an awesome day for spadefish…caught about 20 of them, before we headed back to the landing.

The fish are in shallow because of the flyers in 80ft of water. I beleive you because I have caught 2 sails within site of the Cooper River Bridges in the last couple years.

Fished with a buddy in Hilton Head this weekend and saw flyers at the mouth of the Port Royal Sound. Strange…

I bet it was dnr because a few months ago we were 50 off the beach and the coast guard checked us out and it took over an hour with their new palm pilots… bs man… there are not a whole lot of places to look in a 20ft center…

Ya, we actually saw a flyer on a lttle rip line only about 1-2 miles (35 feet of water) off the beach. We figured the sailfish was following the food. He looked to be about 100 lbs, but thats a pretty mush a guess since I have 0 experience with those estimations.
Your right about the spade fish there to, they have been all over that spot where everyone was anchored up.

DNR checked stopped by our boat on Saturday…really nice guy, no problems.

DNR, you are correct. I agree, nice guy, no problems.
