Leaving the harbor around 9AM

Post hurricane type slop was left out on the ocean when we got out the jetties. No wind, but 3-4ft swell 7 seconds apart. Every 8 or 9th wave would be a 5+ footer with no back to it, however. Billy never slowed to under 33kts. The boat never crashed. The boat never slammed. The boat never bogged or launched.

Video of the boat running out in the morning-

We pulled up on the bait, and it was slow. Worked hard for a few dozen, and went off on our way. Ocean seemed to get more spacing between swells, but a new wave direction showed up between the ones that were spacing out. What we were running through was washing machine slop that would have held me to under 23 knots because its the kind of stuff you just cant get squared up on at all. The slop was tight, and the big ground swell was still there. Every now and then we’d go down in one that’d be over the top of the boat. The F350s didn’t care going up hill, and the hull didn’t care when we came across the crests. Still never less than 33kts. No slamming or pounding, and I could walk around the entire boat and ride anywhere from bow to stern during the entire ride. I’m sure the boat would do much more, but we were running very comfortably. I think I saw the tachs around 4000RPM’s. Motors were hardly working, and it was easy on the crew as well.

Soon, we got out to the yellowmouth suburb (just outside the grouperville limits) and started fishing.

I think the amberjacks and baracudas like the Freeman … a lot.

We must have caught 55 a

North East at 15 and 4.5’ seas!!! Bet you wish you were in a Yellowfin…

Sounds like another great day on the water. I sure would like an invitation one day… I will bring fresh shrimp ceviche, tequila, slim jims, AND cheetos… plus I’m lucky

you are getting good with that go-pro arm. nice haul!

Those queen triggers are the coolest looking fish.

It was a pleasure showing you how to catch grouper  In reality it was good to bottom fish with guys that know what they are doing and being able to learn new things.

Getting the right fish and bait was frustrating at first, but patience paid off. So many times the guys on the boat say “screw it, lets just go we have enough bait”, or they get really impatient when figuring out a bottom spot. These guys knew the drill and let me set up… with a few anchoring tips from mr phin.

Now that we finally got the smackdown out of the way, we will have to get the whole grouper rockstar crew on board. We will hand pick a crew and head out early to get perfect bait and target some monsters…

What rigs and bait did you catch the queen triggers on? It couldn’t have been your live bait grouper rigs.

Billy, I am looking forward to going again!

Jordan, they love live bait. Remember how aggressive triggerfish are…

Catching more or less usually is just hook size and technique. IMO, triggerfish are similar to C bass in that you can start moving your bait around to get the bigger ones turned on and in your cooler pretty fast if you want! Good time to use jigs when they’re like that.

Do think you could get out there and back in a triton 1860 with 20 gallons of gas?

“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman

The first trip I took offshore where I was “captain” was in a homemade 14ft boat with a 40HP tiller motor, 12 gallons of gas, a compass and a watch.

150qt cooler full of kings and C bass, one sea sick buddy, one drunk buddy and one SORE left shoulder.
