Freeman 33 and S4G Report 9-May (pics!)

Got the call Monday from Billy that he wanted to make a bottom run to celebrate the opening of grouper season. Really? It is May! Got to troll MAN! He told me to bring my stuff we would tag team them both.

Grabbed my A Team, you know the guys that you can call at a moments notice, will drop everything and be ready to roll? Yea, those guys! Not that guys that worry about what rods to bring and whether it is a 30, 40 or 70% chance or rain. Not the guys that would rather work on their boat than fish with his buds, Not the guys that are scared to take the day off from work, have some mortgage to close, not even guys that went on Thursday and are still recovering. I am talking the 1st string!

Well Heywood, Brianh, and myself along with Billy, Sisterlovin, and Wild-man Wade met at the dock for a bit of a late start. Loaded the boat and off we went.

The wind was pretty calm and the ocean had a 2 to 3 foot swell. Not much organization to it but the Freeman Cat ate it up at 45mph. I slept the whole way out and before I know it Billy pulled back and it was go time. Deployed the spread and before i know dolphin number one is in the box. Hoped this was the beginning of a great day. Well… slowed down a bit after that.

Had to work for them but the crew was on time and we were able to put couple in the boat before we gave up on the troll and headed to the bottom spots.

My boy Heywood got on a nice fish on the short flat.

This fish did not want to cooperate and had Heywood running around the boat a bit. Plenty of room around the console, cockpit, and bow made this much easier for sure. Next thing you know the tuna is doing his death circles. Well placed gaff shot by yours truly  and Heywood’s personal best 30 pounder comes over the gunnell.

Made the call to pull them in and do some bottom dropping. Wind had picked up but Billy was

What was the bait of choice for grouper?

Gonna have to call this one a sore toes fishing report…Ouch!:sunglasses:

Chuck the bite was strong. Really anything you could get to the bottom. Dolphin bellies, squid, cut bait, etc.

Cape?? What am I missing?

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

I’ve caught one of those weird things…think it’s a trumpet fish. Nice box of fish!

Good to eat? Did not seem like it was much than skin and bones. How would you go about cleaning one?

I don’t know, trying to come up with something exciting. He is a super nice guy and alot of fun to fish with. One of those guys you talk to for 10 mins and feel like you have known him your whole life. He is a darn good fisherman too!

This is what happens when you become such a great fisherman.

You start calling people out for doing something other than fishing whenever they want like you can.

And you don’t mention anything about them helping you or anything in your report… Just a slam on them whenever possible.

Those were blue spotted coronets, and congrats on your limits of grouper. Must have been agonizing for such a trolling pro.

Yes, Yea, ladies and gentlemen of the internet. I do have to give props to my boy Phin for hooking us up with a place to spend the night. Very nice of him. Sorry I did forget to mention that.

Yes Phin, it was difficult to stop trolling and bottom fish but we had to put some meat in the box. Based on the trolling bite in the spot we were I figured we had a better chance with the grouper than the pelagics:wink:
