FREEMAN rides again....(sunday 8-28)

Short story: 6 man limits of grouper

Long story: Got a text from Billy Freeman early in the week “Want to go bottom fishing in the next few weeks”. I of course replied," Sure whenever".

Another text Friday night, “how bout sunday”, again “yeah sure”.

We go through the who ya got , how many ya need for crew stuff and I invite Pole Dancer from PSFL fame and Phin from CF.com fame.

Get a wierd text from Phin at midnight Saturday about knocking his wifes teeth out and he can’t go, but he called in a ringer, Joe.

Get to the boat, get bait and roll out in the slop around 9, by the time we get all our bait. The Freeman of course makes quick work of the 2-3’ washing machine. Come to find out some of my friends actually turned around and went home. That is how good this boat rides. What is really 2-4’ with 12-15kts of wind on top feels like a non-event.

I had the hot hand early and got my limit of grouper at the first spot. The bite died where we were and we moved over a bit which is when Joe came to life and he and Billy proceeded to put on a clinic. Scamps were flying over the rails. Everyone contributed to the pile of fish accumulating in the box.

We speculated as to the # of fish so I pulled the ice and repacked. Counting 1 gag, 14 scamp and a strawberry, I ordered up a few more fish. Joe abliged with two more gags and we literally had to stop fishing at 2 o’clock. We had put 15 grouper in the box in an hour.

Bumped around a bit after that looking for some scratch like bsb and triggers but didn’t see much worth dropping on.

Turned towards the hill and let the Freeman eat it up at 45+kts back to the dock.

Saw one other boat all day.

nice day courtland, i just had a phone call from by buddy down here who owns a freeman. Billy told em about that day, so the question is for saturday should we tournament fish or meat fish  best report ive heard. good job

Great work on the grouper getting. Did you happen to see any debris from the storm while you were ripping lips?

Large nasty jellyfish, that’s it.

Was it really that sloppy out there? Seemed like gorgeous weather on land, man I was hate-en not being able to get out there and grab some bottom dwellers yesterday!

The bouy was 3.6’ w/12 kts. NE in the morning, it was lumpy. Slicked off nice in the PM.

Nice day! Was trying to put a quick trip together for tomorrow but work got in the way and wed-fri look questionable. Planned on pulling the boat this week anyway. Where you out in the 33’ Freeman or the real beast?

The 33’. The beast I assume would be the 40’? That boat is down south.

Nice report! But with out pictures…

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

That’s right, I couln’t imagine what the 40’ would do. My spots are so small and that boats so wide, half the boat would be on them the other wouldn’t…hopefully I can get a ride in one sooner than later.

-Wishes Charlotte was 3 hours closer to the ocean…-

I went the day after this when the slop had died down a little. Wind was blowing out the south a little instead of the NE by the time I got out there. All I can say is that a 33 footer that did what I heard this one did in that ocean is something you’ve got to consider if looking for a boat in this size range. Everyone I know that’s been on this boat says the ride is night and day from anything else.

Joe said he slept in the bow of this 33 running 30+ kts through what I could barely run 21kts through the next (calmer) day without pounding. To give you an idea of what the ocean was like after the blow, there were swell sets moving 90 degrees from one another plus a breeze blowing chop from a 3rd direction. Every few miles, the ocean would change. I’d be running 31kts then have to back off to 21kts, then could go back again until some weird sets would appear. Lots of current and confused waves. Had to really drive the boat I’m sure. Legit 2-4’s with an occassional big boy coming out of nowhere in a weird direction. The freeman ran on autopilot while everybody relaxed…

Pretty impressive.

Phin, very sorry you could not fish with them on Sunday. The internet does not do Billy’s boat justice. You REALLY need to ride in it. If more rode in it before buying big center consoles he would be the biggest 28 plus foot boat maker on the east coast. Probably will be at some point.

I saw a Freeman boat in progress yesterday. What a beautiful boat! I can’t wait to see the twin 350s on the back. For all the post here, it sounds like a great boat.
