Just curious what a fresh water slam would consist of in SC. Is there a real guide line, or does someone say Crappie, LM Bass, Catfish, and everyone else just goes with it? I hear about slams and grand slams on the coast, but never in the upstate.
pretty broad topic. i know of no real guideline, but saltwater inshore slam has to do with “game” fish, so a lake slam could be LMB, striper, and hybrid… a blackwater slam could be redbreast, stumpknocker, and warmouth… a meat slam could be catfish, jackfish, and crappie… trash slam could be gar, mudfish (sorry, Fred… you’ll have to cook me some one day), and an old boot.
the grand slam is when you quit fishing sweetwater and come to the coast!
Thanks for the input. I figured it would be pretty broad, for instance we don’t have striper in my lake, but you can go a few miles down the road to greenwood and catch them.
Barbawang - You forgot Mr. Carp on the trash fish slam. My personal favorite is the SC Black bass Slam - Largemouth, Smallmouth, Spotted, and Redeye. I like your Black water Slam. Perhaps a SC Sunfish slam would include Bluegill, Redear/shell cracker, Redbreast, stump knocker(spotted, warmouth, and…Flier. Got a picture of a beautiful mess of warmouth, redbreast, and spotted caught on the lower Santee last spring. Perhaps with all the water we have had, I’ll see some more this spring…sorry about the wonder off topic.
I know what you mean rasputen, spring fever. these are last spring on the Combahee
since I’ve already sort of gone off on a tangent, i’ll go further: why is it that redbreast are about the only sunfish without a nickname in SC? you’ve got your copperheaded titty bream, stumpknockers, shellcrackers, mollies, etc… but redbreast are just roosters and hens
Dang those are pretty… Fun too I bet.
Oh and the last slam I had was when about a three pound crappie came off just as the net touched it. I slammed my rod in back of the boat…

Wow. Those kind of days make good memories. thanks for the pics.
RE: nick names, I think redbreast are just redbreast out of pure reverence.
Just looking at those shots makes want to go

Hard to improve on the name “redbreast”. If the mud fish comes out of running water I’d be glad to fry up a couple. .
May full moon is coming! Let’s see if the River drops back in the bank by then. Should be some fantastic swamp fishing this year.

The only red breast I’ve ever got were two legged ones at lake wateree with nipple infections…
