So I’ve been tearing up the bass around Charleston on all my spinning gear. Right now Ifish primarily topwater frogs and topwater plugs. I do fish worms and lizards and crawdad lures occasionally as well. Also I have 2 ponds with shad that I usr white paddletails that tear up fish. I wanna catch a few OTF though! What are a few basic flies I need to get started, right now I only have an 8wt so I can throw nig flies, but I think I’m gonna get a 6wt soon. I’m thinkin frog flies and maybe a few dragonfly flies?
bass eat all sorts of ****…you can catch them on all sorts of flies. ep baitfish, toads, gurglers, deer hair poppers, cork poppers, clousers, etc… all work great. you are over thinking it…fish don’t get much easier to catch than largemouth in a pond.
Hi Yakman
Those pond bass will eat all types of flies, google bass flies, warmwater fly fishing… tons of info. Size & color perhaps a main factor. Also most warmwater fly fishing for Bass use large bulky heavy flies. You need that 8wt line to cast those Bass flies. I use my 7wt’s for smallmouth. A 6wt will throw medium streamers, smaller poppers, A popular size for larger freshwater trout.
depends on the size rod you’re using. 3-4wt, i like using a wooly booger. the wooly booger will tear em up. for bigger bass using your 8wt, ive been having luck using a black clouser, dragging it slowly along the bottom(only works in a pond with minimal to no algae/weeds on the bottom). For ponds with a lot of weeds, use a fly that has little to no weight added to it. Topwater popper flies also work well.
