I know this is not a Charleston bassed report, but I figure fly fishing guys are flyfishing guys and would still like to get a report. My Dad (from North Georgia), Brother (from Cincinnati) , and friends Chad and Arnold and me (from Charleston) met at the Toccoa river in North Georgia. This is basically where Tennesse, North Carolina and Georgia meet. We fished the tailwaters of the lake for 3 and a half days. Mostly wading but some float fishing. I decided to use a fly for the first time on trout and had a blast. Caught lots of fingerlings each day and 3-7 keepers each day as well. I was using a 9 foot 5 weight rod and WFF leader with a 9 foot 6X leader tied to a #18 fluffy looking dry fly. Then a 2 foot tippet to a small copper wrapped nimph. Half and half on which one got eaten. Lots of casting Soar arm and sholders, soarlegs form wading 8 hours a day in fast moving water. Caught two really nice trout on the last day that measured around 21 inches. Most of the rest were under 10". We made a smoaker out of a cardboard box and smoaked around 20 pounds of trout. Along with frying some up two nights and bringing a mess home with us. Great trip that I highly recommend. IF anyone knows how to post pictures I can email them to you or get directions and I will put a couple of pictures out there.
Now I just need to figure out how to catch them in salt water.
Thanks for the report jodo. I am headed that way over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Have been going to the Toccoa for the last couple of years. Glad to here a report just before i head out.
I know that its tough for a flatlander to adjust, but you don’t have to put “freshwater” in front of trout when you mention “North Georgia”.
Glad you had a great trip, just look out for the pig farmers up there!
Send me the pics Ill post em for you. that is a hoss trout if he really went 22’. Congrats on the fish on the fly sounds like alot of fun. When it comes to fly fishing its hard to beat mountain trout especially on the dry fly.
I will email them to you when I get home. I did not measure them, but the photo has them laying next to my rod and I measured the rod next to the photo when I got home. The male already had a hooked lower jaw and was getting a very distinct hump. The female is almost as long , but much smaller and her mouth was about half the size of the males. Shed had some large roe sacks that fried up nicely. We had to split them down the back bone to smoke them. And they tasted good. It is really nice when they don’t come anywhere near fitting in your creel bag.
The weekend before we were there a guy caught a 31 inch rainbow, that they told us at the fly shop weighed well over 9 pounds. Now that is a big fish.
By the way KPP, the big ones had crawdad shells, a Cicada, and some pieces of helgramite in there bellys along with meal from a fish feader. The small ones had lots of small bugs, some crawdads, and some worm looking things in there bellies. The last night we were there we floated down to Curtis switch and there were hundreds of trout feading just above the bridge. They were eating something that was hatching up, but nothing in my fly box must have looked right. Major lock jaw. IF I could have figured out what they wanted I could have flat worn them out.
