My ten week old girl woke me up about 430 am. After feeding her, I gave her to momma and decided to see if I could get some top water action when it was still pitch black. No takers at first, so I switched to a grub and caught two reds. Saw something crashing next to the bank and switched back to top water and hooked a fairly decent size ladyfish. It was still way before sun up and very dark. At first I thought I had a monster trout:frowning_face: Back home to start the long weekend before 7 am.
Anyone else try topwater at night. I assume you would want a big moon or some lights shining in the water?
Narcosis
I’ve caught some big reds on the flats at night with topwater, but I have had no success with trout anywhere except around very well lit docks.
Hey, at least you got to catch some fish to get your day going! I’m jello! Lucky you:slightly_smiling_face:

Did almost the exact same thing this morning. Couple blowups in the dark. No connection. Finally got a solid bite near some bait shallow. Pretty good sized lady fish. That was it on top. Switched to a paddle tail as the sun was coming up and got a borderline trout rat red lizardfish and pulled off a small flounder.
To answer the nighttime question, I have had a fair amount of luck throwing topwater in not so well lit places in the dark including, near inlets and even in the surf. Hookup rates are terrible and you don’t really see the strike but yeah it can work. Probable more moon is better than less. Was hoping for more trout activity but water may have been a little too low or there just aren’t that many in the area I was fishing this AM. Keep trying it doesn’t always pan out but sometimes…
Went back this afternoon to the same spot and caught 4. All small.
I use to go out anytime between 11pm and 1am and throw a buzz bait for largemouth bass. Caught many good fish in the dark.
