Friday Lake Murray Report

Went out friday after work. Lake was a bit rough. Left the launch at the dam about 7 and saw 8 boats backed into the entrance to yacht cove. I would have never thought of looking for stipers there this time of year. Maybe they were just trying to get out of the wind. Headed to spence with into the wind, then the wind shifted and I came back into the wind. Ended up catching three 22" to 28" and one 18". Caught the 28" one about 100 yards from the towers. I was reading a lot of fish in the channel almost half way between the towers and spence but could not get a hit. I wasted about 1.5 of my 4 hours trying there or I might have done a little better.

nice job tom. have you ever trolled through yacht cove? there’s some nice humps and drops in there that i’ve marked fish.

I only went in once. It was just after a cold front and the wind was ripping and that was the only place I could safely go. There were no fish there at that time. But that was March, maybe April.

you can also go around goat island towards lighthouse and lake murray marinas, there’s some nice spots in there too, it’s more protected from the E and W winds that really get the main lake up.

I always ran from the wind to coves and came up with nothing. It seems like avoiding the wind = no fish for me. This summer I have just gone out and braved the wind and seem to catch fish. I think I need to explore the lake more. I have a handful of places I catch fish. Some days the fish are not there. I need to figure out where they go. Although I guess if I figured out everything about them I would be a pro.

agreed. i’m much more limited in where i go, especially in the wind. there’s lots of good structure and still deep water up lake around dreher st park. seems the wind doesn’t chop the water as rough up there either. it’s just a long motor from the dam. when i’m going up there, i’ll usually put in at koon landing off 378 at shull island.
