Friday late report with pics

Ended up taking a mental health day friday and went offshore. I didn’t bring my tape measure to measure wave height like I promised from now on, but it was pretty nice. Tried out some new fancy weighted circle hooks only to provide a feast to what seemed like every mahi in the SC area. Most of the mahi that were caught stripped 2 or 3 baits off the circle hooks before hitting my skirted J hook setups. Ended the day with 4 nice gaffers by going through 3 dozen baits. Lost 2 at the boat, one by spitting the fancy circle hook, while in the air at the side of the boat, into the hair of my buddy behind me as I ducked out of the way. The second wrapped himself up in the dredge and unhooked.

First time offshore fisher.

My gaffer.

Looks like ya’ll had fun.
Different technique for circle hooks. But how would i know i don’t use em for trolling only for catfish on the lake or bottom fish LOL. wave of the future i’m told. good on ya for trying.

Nice mental health day. I havent tried the circle hooks - very reluctant to change. Nice job!

I’ve had much better luck trolling with J hooks for dolphin. The circles seem to work for everything else, except for dolphin. I’ll stick to J hooks for dolphin trolling and when tossing baits to schoolies.
