Friday night harbor off JIYC

Just finished heading a cooler from last night. Started in harbor at 8:15, last of outgoing tide, through 10:30 on an incoming tide. Numbers were good but size was medium to large with some small mixed in. Certainly a good night.

And about 20 other boats for company. It was a parking lot out there last night.

It’s good to see a positive post. It took me about ten minutes to head my mess of shrimp.

On Saturday night we saw a lot fewer boats that you described here for Friday. We shrimped the north side of the harbor and got roughly 1/3 of a limit (9 qts headed). Size was mainly 4-1/2 to 5 inch shrimp. There were a lot of smaller ones there too, but the 5/8" mesh self-culls the little ones. Some casts you could see a swarm of small shrimp swimming right through the net up near the horn. We were very pleasantly surprised with the size shrimp we encountered.

Back at the Shem Creek dock, we ran into another boat with a similar (volume) catch, but they were mostly 2-1/2 to 3 inch and caught from south side of harbor.

We enjoyed the calm water Saturday, even if the catch was still light. It was like glass most of the night. The last 3 nights out, the harbor was carrying a good chop.
