My brother-in-law & I made the trip to Charleston and fished Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning. Had a great time on the water and did a lot of exploring and looking for fish. We used plastics, top water plugs and mud minnows (corks & carolina rigs). We launched at IOP marina and fished to Gray Bay, Hamlin Sound and anywhere we thought we’d have a chance at reds & trout. We caught plenty of little sharks, stingrays, lady fish and one small flounder but couldn’t find a redfish or trout.
I was really surprised by the super high tide on Friday evening. We didn’t know it was coming. It was so high that most all of the grass was under water and you couldn’t see where the creeks were. I had to look at my gps to see where they should be.
We finished fishing for the evening on Friday and took a short break on Capers Island. We were watching the tide pouring in through the flood gate into the impoundment and saw this huge gator waiting for a meal coming in with the water.
As the tide dropped on Saturday midday, we decided to head from north of IOP towards the Charleston harbor. Huge mistake on a June Saturday at near low tide. We had to contend w/ tons of boats throwing out large wakes in my 17 foot Sundance flats boat.
On Sunday morning we were in the creek on the north end of IOP and when we came up on a tiny hummock we saw 4 deer (2 bucks & 2 does). We were so close that it spooked them and they walked out. I thought they’d have to swim but they walked across the marsh to a larger hummock a quarter mile away.
Overall we had a great time and enjoyed seeing some really cool stuff. Only thing missing was quality fish.
