My son and I went last Friday w/ Dan Utley AKA Fishin Coach in Calibogue Sound, the Broad River and creeks in between. We targeted cobia first and then redfish. We’ve never gone after cobia and that’s why I wanted to go with someone who could show me the ropes. We tried for a couple of hours in the howling wind and caught several sharks including a few decent sized bonnet heads. We were using a live croaker and whole frozen squid on the bottom. We couldn’t get a cobia to bite but the two boats fishing along side of each landed one. Don’t know what they were using.
We were fishing the last couple hours of the incoming and as the current slowed we decided to pull anchor and attempt to hunt them in the Broad. When we got over there the wind had kicked up the chop so much that we decided to stay on the Hilton Head/Pickney island side and chase redfish. We fished the first part of the falling tide along the edge of the broad south/west of Daws island. We couldn’t seem to find them there so we headed back up a few creeks where we found a very few reds. I hooked two but couldn’t keep them on the hook long.
Dan did a great job teaching me and showing me what to look for. That’s the kind of charter I was looking for and would definitely recommend him.
Despite the wind the weather was awesome and we had a great time.
