Friday

Knew it was going to be windy, so thought we could anchor and downrod for a change. Water temp up to 67. After getting blown off our first choice, we settled for a 53 foot hole off a point. Saw fish often enough, mostly between 35 and 45 feet, but they were not much into biting. Got one short and a 24 on the downrods, and a 21 and 23 on a big float. Losing the anchor was a bummer, but that’s pretty much what kind of day it was.

3 keepers isn’t bad. I was going to go out after work but this wind is much worse than the forecast. Plus west wind seem to double in speed on the lake.

What size anchor? I might have a spare one you can have. Let me know the size and I’ll check and see what I have.

Thanks, Spoonmaster, but I stopped and bought all the necessary replacement items on the way home so that we’ll be ready the next time the Capt wants to go.

Speaking of spoons, even tried jigging a “crippled herring” whenever I saw fish under the boat, but that triggered no reactions today.

I’ve never been a big fan of the “crippled herring”. I’ve tried several sizes and colors. They look great to me. Apparently I haven’t yet found the color and size “herring” that the fish on Murray prefer. In fact, I’ve been unimpressed with most of the varieties of spoons I’ve tried. I do like one that Cabelas sells.
I can make most folks who fish with me and use a “crippled herring” cry if I can put on one of my favorite Berry’s. Borrow one from Fogman and try it if he has one to spare. I prefer the little 1/2 ounce white with silver reflector. Believe it or not I’ve caught some really big stripers, catfish and largemouth with that little sweetheart of a spoon. Be sure to change out to a larger treble hook if you buy one. The stock hook will sometimes bend out almost straight with a large fish. I also think flourocarbon line or leader helps tremendously in relatively clear water with the spoons.
Keep in mind with my advice that I’m not targeting stripers. I mostly fish for white perch and largemouth. The stripers that I catch are usually around schools of baitfish feeding with, or sometimes on, the white perch.
