Fripp Island advice?

I’m a freshwater bass fisherman and never done much salt water fishing and need a little advice? Or ideas? Anything that would pull my string and the kids . We are going on vacation at fripp next week and would love for the family to catch about anything I’m thinking about pulling the old bass boat down if it would be worthwhile? Or just fish off the bank ? I would love to catch a Red fish . Thanks in advance.

Fripp is fantastic. You will love the place. my suggestion is to take some crab lines and hit the crabbing dock at high tide. Use some chicken necks/backs. The kids will love it. I would advise against bringing the boat if you are new to the salt. My suggestion for fishing is to bring a couple of heavy spinning rigs and fish the long dock at the end of the island. Use live mud minnows if you can get them and maybe cut squid. the guy at the tackle shop can show you how to tie up a Carolina rig. Maybe catch some flounder, whiting, trout. To catch a Red would be great but really tough from the banks. If you have time and want to do it right book a half day charter out of the marina. You will not be disappointed. good luck. the deer are everywhere and practically starving. don’t feed them.

Drive down to the south end of the island. That is Skull Inlet. Carolina rig baited with live mud minnows or finger mullet will catch flounder down there this time of year. Cast next to the rock jetty or out on either side of the feeder creek that comes in there. Last 2-3 hours of outgoing tide and/or 1st 3 hours of incoming tide. The flounder will be facing toward the mouth of the creek on the falling tide and facing the inlet on the incoming tide. Cast out and let it set a minute or two. Then retrieve slowly stopping every few seconds. They sometimes bite softly and will lay back down in the sand to consume the bait, wait a few seconds before setting the hook. I have also caught some nice trout while fishing there in May-June.
Toss small pieces of fresh shrimp on double on single drop rigs out in the channel and you’ll catch whiting, rays and small sharks. Gay’s seafood docks are on the right just before you cross the bridge to Hunting Island on the way in. You can buy a minnow trap at most tackle shops and or course Wal-Mart. Bait it with anything from shrimp to sardines or canned cat food. There are several small ditch creeks that run through the marsh in the middle of the island. Find one that has water at low tide and drop your trap off. It will fill up quickly. A flow-troll style minnow bucket is good to have. Put a length of rope on it and stake out with a sand spike while you are fishing to keep the minnows happy.
Have fun !

Thanks for the info and ideas.

Hi there. I have a home on Fripp and fish there frequently. You can put in at the Marina at Fripp or at Russ Point as described above. To put in at the marina is free but if you leave your boat on the dock or in the parking lot there is a charge per day based upon length of boat. Whether you put in at marina or Russ point you will likely fish the same spots. Out of Russ Point hand a right and there are a series of creeks in which to fish. Caught reds, trout, and even a spade back in those. From Fripp marina you head back toward Fripp inlet bridge and it will be a left once you get to Fripp inlet by bridge. You,don’t need your bass boat to catch a red though. Fripp has lagoons (with alligators) and reds have gotten in there. Likely the big reds out of slot. To fish these larger (bull reds) in the lagoons I use freshly caught mullet, cut in fillet “strips”. Put on bottom w/ as little weight/resistance as possible (no weight if stagnant water). Spinning reel 2500-3000 class 12-15 lb mono to swivel to 40 lb 2’ mono to a 4/5 hook, bait. Soak baits “on bottom” let the fish roll w/ the bait- way loose drag, make sure he has chomped before you set hook. Then just take your time, he’ll run at least 2x…keep drag just over snug.

For the south end of Fripp there is a point with some breakers (skull inlet). Go all the way down Tarpon Blvd. it will dead end at this point. On an incoming tide the water will come over those breakers and then into the back creeks. Can catch everything from whiting to who knows what else.

I could go on and on. I will be there week of Memorial Day if you have any questions. I am always around the marina in a 22’ sea foam green sea hunt. If you shoot me your email I am happy to give you my cell for any other questions you may have. Best of luck and tight lines.

I’m a freshwater bass guy too, so I can relate. As others have noted, a Carolina rig works. Use a 3/4-1 1/2 oz egg sinker, 18" leader, and a #1 or #2 hook with pieces of shrimp, you can catch a lot of fish on that. Don’t buy crappy shrimp, buy bigger fresh shrimp like you’d eat, and cut them into thirds. I’ve caught reds, whiting, pompano, trout, rays, and various sharks on that setup using a chunk of shrimp the size of the end of your thumb. Set a minnow trap, use mud minnows as well. Tie on a popping cork, trail a minnow, shrimp, or gulp behind it.

Equipment? I use my bass fishing gear. Bait casting reels with anything from 6’6" medium action casting rods to 7 1/2’ flipping rods, 7’’ spinning rods with 2500 sized reels work well. I tend to use braid as a mainline, but basic Berkeley Big Game mono works well.

Bring your bass lures. Don’t hesitate to throw a Zara Spook, PopR, Rattletrap, grub on a jighead, or even a Texas rigged plastic worm. They all work better than you’d think. You hear about people using the Trout Trick? It was originally a freshwater bait sold by Gambler several years ago. You’d be surprised what you can catch on a Zoom Trick worm Texas rigged or on a jighead. Just pretend you’re bass fishing…look for structure to cast to…rocks, docks, oysters, depressions, etc.

Remember to wash your reels/rod down good daily, and spray down with
