My wife loves some frog legs, she ate them a lot living next to a swamp in Bamberg, however I have no clue where to start… I would like to gig some for her so we can have a fried frog leg dinner now and again.
I know obviously I need some form of head lamp and a gig with a barb at the end but where would I wade ? where has hard enough ground to walk around ? I live in the Charleston area but travel a lot to Moncks Corner, Orangeburg, St. Stephen…does anyone frog gig around here ? any tips ?
Honestly, there are a few places in Charleston that sell frog legs. Unless you are determined to hunt them down yourself, you would come out cheaper an easier to buy them. One place to get them fresh by the pound is Mr. Ps Piggly Wiggly in S-vile and another is the guy who sells exotic meats on Bacons Bridge Rd right off of Dorchester…

I’ve seen that guy off of Bacon’s Bridge but never went down there, I’ll try that !thank you Pitviper. I would like to gig my own if for no other reason than to spend some time with the wife she’s much more than willing to fish and hunt with me after the sun goes down, she’s not a fan of 6am haha.

And that is a great reason to gig your own!! But now, you have a back up plan to get her those frog legs!! Good luck!!

There’s frogs at the lake by the thousands. Great place to go to get huge frogs too. they sound more like buffalo than cows. But you need to go in a boat they hop away when you try to wade up to them. I use my coon lite with a b&m frog gig on about a 6ft Bambo stick in my kayak. I’ve even shot them with the 22 pistol. But with the rising cost of ammo I now stick to the gig. If you have any more questions just ask. Happy hunting.
While I generally don’t worry too much about gators, I would use some care when wading around big water or areas where big gators hang out. Just stay aware. The best scouting tool is your ears and you will need a bottle of mosquito repellant. After 28yrs+ of low country residence, I have never eaten a SC frog leg. I got my fill one night over in Alabama, when my 2 buddies and I fried up 36 sets of legs and tried to eat them in one setting. I have honestly never wanted another one since. The curse of gluttony.
Or find a couple of pond owners that will let you gig or shoot the frogs with a BB gun. A good BB gun will shoot across a pond and knock them over backwards, so that they don’d jump into the pond.

What lake you talking about?
BOB
Lake Marion
Dang I live on Lake Marion. I would like to go. I live on Eutaw Creek, anywhere close? I haven’t been frog gigging 30-35 years.
BOB
the flats beside macs are the best. I go whenever I stay down there shellcracker fishing which wont come back around until next april. Cant wait either I normal take the whole month off.
Never heard of macs but they should be anywhere you can get close to the bank don’t you think? I just might go one night I am not much on the shellcrackers but I give the crappie a rough time. Thanks a lot I will let you know if i can find some.
BOB
I googled macs and found it. Over next to Harrys!

Ever been!? Id rather get on a big bed of shellcrackers than catching a blue marlin while shooting a ten point buck off the back of the Hugh Heffner’s party boat. I rescheduled my wedding because it fell in april. My wife was pissed but I caught a two and half pounder that year so it was all good. But yea its right next Harrys but it works best when in a boat.
Yea I couldn’t go if I had to wade. My High Tide will be good for for some frog gigging I use it flounder gigging and it does great.
I got some shellcrackers a couple years ago that smelled and tasted like mud from a swamp and that’s the last time I fished for them. They are fun. What’s the law on shooting frogs with a .22?
BOB
My rule of tumb is innocent until proven guilty. Don’t know the laws but ive shot them with the 22 before and ill play dumb until proven other wise.
