From Johnson OB to Mercury OB

I have to say I am really impressed with my 2008 90HP Mercury. I purchased the boat and motor last feb and I have been able to install the trim/tilt sender, replace the water pump, replace fuel linkage parts, and in the process of adding water temp sender with gauge. The installation time for these tasks averaged about one hour. My 1990 120HP Johnson wasn’t as easy to work on. I actually get to fish on weekends I do the installation! Im sure the difference is due to improved engineering design and techniques. What a difference 20+ years makes!!!

Maybe, but you went to a Mercury product. I promise you in 20 years it will not still be running.

I like the newer merc’s myself, and sometimes you trade off quietness, power, fuel economy etc, for rock hard longevity. But I have to agree. That 1990 Johnson will be on someones boat still kicking it after that 2008 90 gets retired. Enjoy your new motor, with all the marvels of modern engineering, weight reduction, power and fuel economy. Just don’t expect it to last 30 years.

A V4 looper will last 50+.

it will still be running, but all the components will have rusted to ruins.

easy fellas
I am a die hard Yamaha guy myself, but the newer mercs are great motors in their own right.
we see a lot of mercs from the 80’s and 90’s still running strong

You said it Chris, 80’s/90’s. My dads Optimax is on its 3rd powerhead, countless hoses replaced, fuel pumps, air injectors, and left him stranded about 4 times. It only has 600 hours on it.

Good thing he got the free extended warranty when he bought the boat. Now that it’s up he is looking at swapping to a V Max.

Theres a reason why when you go to boat shows around here, its more of a Yamaha show than anything else. If you look back and think about it, almost every make of boat at the show this year had a Yamaha or two, or even three haning off the back. Sure there were two or three Mercs out there, but they were few and far between. Now, if you go to a show down in Florida, the Mercs will out show the Yamaha’s, but no one ever said folks in Fla were bright!!!

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■ guys. I assume most of you are captains and use your rigs almost everyday. So I appreciate the guidance. I do like the Yamys but I had to go with what I could afford. Once I get the kids through college though you can bet your sweet “assprin bottle” I will have a completely new rig with the latest best engineered motor?.I will probably just drive it up and down the Ashley to show off and not worry about catching fish! lol jk Thanks again guys!

Here’s what I should have said.

Glad you are happy. Now get out there and make some memories.
